I am a Magna Cum Laude college graduate (3.95 GPA) with degrees in Russian Language and Literature and Linguistics. Additionally, while serving in the USAF, I graduated from the Defense Language Institute (DLI) at the Presidio of Monetary, California where I completed an intensive 54 week Russian language immersion program. Hence, I know well what it takes to reach one’s academic goals.
I tutor English, composition and creative writing, to both international and native-speaking English students who wish to have a better command of the English language.
I like to tutor writing which showcases my client’s individuality. I believe our style should reflect not only our knowledge of the material but also who we are as receivers of that material. In my experience, teachers and professors tend to give higher marks to those who inject their being into their writing than to those who rigidly stay within the lines. I am passionate about helping my students express not only their understanding of the subject matter, but more importantly, who they are.
One thing my students claim to like about me is that I create a very safe, secure, and comfortable learning environment in which they feel free to be themselves, to make mistakes without judgement, and to progress with my genuine encouragement. They enjoy my easy-going style and appreciate my sense of humor. I am not in any way a prescriptivist - I do not overemphasize rules, I encourage exploration and individual style.
I started tutoring English and ESL at North Seattle College after I graduated from the University of Washington in 2004. In 2008 I began to work independently as a tutor mostly conducting children's reading groups. A few years into that and I began to tutor both ESL and English, and from time to time, Russian.
I would say that since 2004, I have tutored over 100 students. My students have gone on to do well both academically and in life.
