I am a certified teacher in the State of Oklahoma. I am presently tutoring students in grades 1-3 so that they can become more proficient in reading skills. Usually, I start a lesson with a carefully selected story to read. Then hone in on specific areas that need attention. I use a combination of worksheets, games on computer, games that require moving around, and where possible, books of specific interest to the child. Lesson segments are 10-15 minutes in length, for up to an hour total. I believe in phonics as an essential tool for figuring out new words, as well as using context where appropriate.
I also am certified to teach English as a Second Language. In this case, I start with where the student is at conversationally, and transition to reading. Much of this instruction is vocabulary building, pronunciation modeling and practice, and in the case of advanced students, English Language sentence structure.
I have tried to keep my rates affordable. I do not have variable rates at this time.
In my spare time, I am presently working as a substitute teacher for the public schools. I have done this for about three years. I am a retired teacher, as well as a private tutor.
In addition to my BA in Education from Occidental College in California, I have obtained a MPA from the University of New Hampshire. I have traveled to may countries and hosted many foreign students. The best travel experience of all was an unescorted trip trip through much of Mexico, done by bus with the local population. This immersion into a second language experience gave me valuable insight into the challenges of second language students.
