College student in mathematics gives affordable math lessons to middle school and high school students in Pasadena, CA

I am a mathematics major who is comfortable tutoring mathematics up to A.P. Calculus. I am happy to tutor anyone from middle school level to high school level. I'm a junior in college about to transfer over to another University out of state in Fall 2017. My majors are in Applied Math and Physics. When I get to know my students, although I may not be able to tutor them face to face always, I will have availabilities to tutor via Skype after transferring. I also plan on updating a website with personal instruction and tips for solving problems, unique to what students find interesting or what they could use for improvement. This is so they have a little more to take away from this experience than just working on problem after problem. Hopefully, they will see a bigger picture of what is going on AND how math is fun, which is what it's all about. My style is this: to evoke consistency and a sustainable interest. As an Applied Math major, I will give real world examples to illustrate the problems in the classroom to something they might be relate to. I am an easy going and very personable individual. I will use my time efficiently and have full belief that the benefit of learning mathematics will be realized early on.

Thomas's Experience

I have tutored over 100 hours at a local elementary school in Pasadena. I was a mentor for the Adelante Youth Alliance, a non profit organization in Pasadena for 1 year for the same elementary school students. I have tutored Pre-Calculus to High School and Community College students. Although, to be honest, I'm young and just starting out, my energy has proven to work well with many types of students. I find that communicating goes far beyond the classroom. I have seen my mentees excel in life, whether that be in the classroom or on the soccer field. There is a balance, and I have learned to be open in my approach towards assistance. I find that an open ear to the questions students may ask in general is just as important to my understanding of the subjects I have helped with.

I will start off by getting to know what areas the student finds doable and what areas could improve. I find that working on the strengths and not just hyper focusing on what needs to be improved is just as important. There needs to be a level of satisfaction in students ability and it is my goal to help them realize that. I will not spend hours on one problem, but rather aim to the greater level of understanding in all areas of math.

Note: I work in 2 hour blocks. I will provide tips and accessible supplements on my website to reenforce student understanding.
