Piano instruction for primary - 3rd level students, including those with disabilities
I have been playing piano since childhood, and had the pleasure of learning from several wonderful teachers. I have also studied folk guitar, voice, music theory and composition. My professional endeavors have included singing with several music groups when I was younger. Later I taught music lessons to children in their homes, and have successfully taught one child with a cognitive disability (who now plays at the 2nd level). I love teaching children, and making music fun and accessible to them. My approach has four parts: theory, rhythm, finger techniques, and performance. I have learned how to customize lessons based on individual needs and interests. Most children who have studied with me remember those moments when they were able to master a technique, play a song by heart, impress their parents, and move on to another book. Of course, it takes time to get there, so I also work on making lessons comfortable.
Students are responsible for their own instructional materials. In certain situations (e.g., disabilities or very young children) I'm willing to teach for half an hour instead of an hour, at least at first.
