Math should be elegant. Students should be taught there are various ways to do problems, so use context and pick the most effective and elegant method. Easy is good whenever appropriate. I want to teach my students to think. For instance, labeling with volume etc. can get tedious and messy. I recommend adding units on the solution. At the same time, they must know to label carefully problems for physics and chemistry all the way through the problem. There can be no shortcut here. Why make things difficult unless necessary. This has built trust with my students knowing I am here for them not here to lift math on a pedestal. One last important aspect of my tutoring is that I do not know everything, and my students learn from watching me tackle a problem from different angles including asking them for information they have. I believe this helps them not be intimidated by my knowledge and they feel an important part of the process. It may take longer to do a problem, but they are learning how to solve a problem in more than one way. They learn to use their brain.

During my undergrad I worked in the math lab. After graduation from my undergrad, I substituted an English class for several months in a correctional school for junior high. I then took a math and science long term sub position in a magnet program. Next, I took twenty-one graduate hours in the theory of mathematics. During that time, I taught College Algebra. The following three years at taught in an inner-city high school, Algebra I, Consumer Math, Honors Computer Math and TAAS tutoring. Next, I home educated my five children. The oldest is the only one I home educated all grades. He is currently in medical school and receives many honors. I have taught various subjects in large coops. Latin, Geography, Math, Recorder, and Writing. I have also graded many subjects, but mainly math, Latin, and Physics. I enjoy tutoring more than anything. Tutoring is by far my greatest skill. I have thirty-five years experience. I mainly tutor Algebra, but can help students in other areas as well.
