Methodology

Hi! Call me Mr. T.
I can help you with one-on-one tutoring that can help you learn how to write more clearly, with greater skill and organization and with style. Writing is thinking, so you will also be enhancing your critical thinking skills and learning how to determine and deliver what your reader expects from your words. I like to make my classes dynamic, interactive and tailored to the particular needs of students. I believe that anyone can learn to write more clearly, accurately and effectively and it is always my prime directive to make sure my students acquire the skills they need - not just pass the course. There is no shame allowed in my classes, so you will never worry about having to write perfect prose, or fear to ask a question. I think people learn from mistakes, and I know that the reason you are taking English classes is because you need to get the skills. I will do everything in my power to make sure you do exactly that.

Background

I have a Master's Degree in Journalism from Columbia University, and began teaching college level English classes in 2007, after a career as a professional writer. I have taught a variety of class levels for four different universities both in-person and online. I have taught 100 level classes including: English Fundamentals; 200 level courses including Composition I & II, Business Communications, Journalism and Academic Writing & Research; and 300 level courses including Advanced Academic Writing and Research. I have also taught high school students from freshman to seniors in an Upward Bound program. Often I provide students with discussion-style lessons that encourage active participation, singly or in teams. To me the mind is like a muscle: the more you exercise it, the stronger it will become over time.
