After working as a public after-school teacher, as well as in the field of child-care and mentorship since 2004, through my experience, I have found that serving as a role model has become an incredibly effective teaching method. Any child or any human being for that matter is receptive and responsive to a teacher who is sure of themselves, and their preaching; a teacher who is articulate and direct with their words and actions; and a teacher who can be trusted and who makes their student feel comfortable in their presence. These three basic characteristics I've found, win over a students faith in a teacher, and greatly increase the rate of comprehension, application, and acquisition of knowledge.
I develop my curriculum around student interests, which fosters motivation and stimulates the passion to learn. One way to steer learning in a direction relevant to student interest, is to invite student dialogue about the lessons and units of study. Given the opportunity for input, students generate their own ideas and add to the pre-existing ones that have fostered my own imagination, and impact how I develop my lessons. When students share ownership in the curriculum, they feel a strong sense of purpose, are motivated to work hard, to set and accomplish their own goals, and to perform well.
Having studied and worked with musicians of world class ability for the past 8 years, I have adapted effective teaching techniques, and fused them with my own skills and knowledge to create a flexible approach that can mold itself to the abilities, individual needs and goals of a student or a program as a whole. Through my continued studies in music, and many other fields, my ability to relate to all people, including students continues to grow. I am able to quickly assess what kind of approach is appropriate for a group or an individual, and I have experience implementing practices that directly improve learning ability, interest in and comprehension of material. I understand the importance of time management, creative thinking, attention to detail and the ability to make something difficult seem fun and worthwhile.
I have worked as a trumpeter, composer, arranger, and studio musician for the past 20 years. Over the past 6 years, since graduating with a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from SUNY Purchase, I've been performing as a trumpeter throughout Europe, Asia, Haiti, the Caribbean, and across the U.S., playing in ensembles led by highly acclaimed and/or Grammy-winning artists such as Steve Coleman, Henry Cole, Darcy James Argue, Orrin Evans, Josh Evans, Jimmy Greene, Tyshawn Sorey, Eric Bergen and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra.
I won the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Solo Competition in 2007, and competed as one of five finalists in the 2009 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition. I was also one of two trumpeters selected internationally to participate in the 2010 School for Improvisational Music Intensive Program, one of two trumpeters considered for the 2014 Juilliard Artist Diploma program and one of four trumpeters selected to participate in the 2015 Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music.
I also have numerous awards to my name: the 2016 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award (ASCAP Foundation), 4 semi-finalist nominations in the International Songwriting Competition (2016 & '17), and 1 finalist nomination in the 2017 International Songwriting Competition. Currently, I am pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder, as a Graduate Part Time Instructor, where I perform and teach internationally.
Over the past 8 years I have absorbed effective methods of teaching, direction, and management by the likes of world-class musicians and educators, like Jon Faddis, Todd Coolman, Ray Vega, Arturo O'Farrill, David O'Rourke, Jim Rotondi, and Brad Goode to name just a few. I have worked as Departmental Assistant for two tri-state area universities (for Todd Coolman, the Director of Jazz Studies at SUNY Purchase, and for Conrad Herwig, director of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University), and currently as a GPTI for one of the finest Universities in the world, the University of Colorado. Over the past 5 years, I have worked as a music, piano, and trumpet teacher/clinician at NYC-based music education programs such as the Gramercy Brass Band Camp, the Afro Latin Jazz Academy of Music, New York Ensemble Classes, the Lyceum Kennedy International School, The New York Jazz Academy, and Jubilee Enrichment Programs.
