I approach teaching on a case by case basis depending on the student. I would first ask what the student knows and then plan a lesson from there. There is no one size fits all since there are varying skill levels.
I have 9 years of photography experience and 5 of those years were for paid photography work. I started with a film photography class almost 20 years ago. Then a few years later one of my first jobs was for a national portrait studio. Later on, as digital photography became more affordable I took of portraits as a hobby and after a while started shooting with models. A few years later out of necessity I became a full-time self-employed photographer and have been so for 3.5 years.
