Food plays a significant role in every culture. It can define a culture’s traditions, heritage, and a country’s identity.

Traditional family recipes are passed down from one generation to the next.

People grow up with favorite meals that their parents or grandparents prepared and in most cases traditional meals that are connected with their culture.

Another example of this is when you travel. Anytime you travel to a new country, you can’t really experience a country’s identity without trying their local foods and traditional dishes.

Rim Tai Kitchen – Thailand

We start off our list with cooking classes at Rim Tai Kitchen at the Four Seasons Resort in the largest city in northern ThailandChiang Mai.

Rim Tai Kitchen’s cooking classes are limited to 8 attendees, which makes them feel semi-private.

Their popular cooking class, $213 per person, includes a local Thai market visit with the Four Seasons chef. There, you will pick out fresh, indigenous ingredients by hand with the help of the chef, and you will go back to the resort where you will have a full on Thai cooking experience.

You will prepare a total of three traditional northern Thai dishes and have the chance to enjoy your delicious hard work after.

Our next destination, Los Dos, is located in the colorful city of Merida in the state of Yucatan in Mexico.

Cooking classes here will not only introduce you to delicious dishes from the Yucatan Peninsula, but you will also learn about the Mexican culture, including a visit to the local market and learning about traditional Mayan dishes.

Their most popular class, Taste of Yucatan, $200 per person, is a full-day experience. You will have breakfast at the house’s terrace, visit a local market with Chef Mario who is the head chef and director at Los Dos, learn about indigenous ingredients, prepare a full Yucatan meal and enjoy your tasty work with drinks.

Next on our list is Le Mas Candillier, located in Mougins, France, which is a small village that is a 15-minute drive from Cannes.

Le Mas Candillier is a boutique hotel, spa, and houses two gourmet restaurants, and one being a Michelin-Star restaurant.

One of the many things you can enjoy at Le Mas Candillier is taking cooking classes with the head chef, Xavier Burelle. The cooking classes, $165 per person, will take place at the Michelin-star restaurant, Le Candille and you will have the chance to learn some of Chef Xavier’s renowned dishes.

Tierra Negra – Argentina

Veronica and Manuel, founders of Tierra Negra in Buenos Aires, Argentina, both believe that food is the best part of a trip when traveling to a new destination.

Tierra Negra will blend food, wine, and cultural traditions to allow you to experience the delicious food Argentina has to offer.

Tierra Negra offers four different types of cooking classes ranging from $50 to $80 per person.

Their classes will offer lessons on how to cook authentic Argentinian cuisines such as empanadas, which is a type of baked or fried turnover consisting of pastry and filling. In Argentina, empanadas are usually filled with beef or vegetables.

Castello di Vicarello – Italy

History, food and wine come together in this medieval castle built in the 13th century, Castello di Vicarello.

By traveling 62 miles south of Florence, you will find Castello di Vicarello in Cinigiano, Tuscany.

In order to experience their cooking classes, you must stay at the property a minimum of three nights.

You will learn how to cook gourmet Tuscan dishes by using vegetables from the Castle’s garden. In addition to learning how to cook, you will also be able to enjoy your delicious work with wine that is made using only grapes grown on the Estate.

The Agrarian Kitchen – Australia

A 19th century schoolhouse in Lachlan within the Tasmania valley turned into a cooking school and farm, The Agrarian Kitchen will allow you to experience the farm to table type of cooking.

Within the 5 acres of the property, the Agrarian Kitchen grows organic fruits and vegetables.

The founder, Rodney Dunn, leads their most popular cooking class, “The Agrarian Experience”, $260 per person.

This cooking class includes a tour of the property’s vegetable garden, harvesting the products you will use for your cooking class, cooking and learning techniques for each unique dish and finally enjoying your meals with local Tasmanian wines.

Philipkutty’s Farm – India

Philipkutty’s Farm is located on a beautiful island in the small village of Vechoor in the state of Kerala in India. Your cooking class with Philipkutty’s Farm will not be your typical cooking lesson.

Their famous cooking experience is a “Cookery Holiday”, where you will stay at the farm with an authentic Kuttanadan (backwater) family and get an insight on Kerala cuisine and rich culture. You will be cooking mostly Syrian Christian dishes with a strong backwater influence.

Some sample dishes done in the past include chicken stew, duck curry and roast, curd curry, Kerala fish curry, vegetarian dishes and traditional desserts.

Escuela de Arroces y Paella is the place to go to if you want to learn how to cook an authentic Paella Valenciana, which is a traditional rice dish native to Valencia.

Located in the port city of Valencia in Spain, Esceula de Arroces y Paellas’ most popular cooking class will teach you to step by step on how to cook the Valencian paella, which is composed of rice, rabbit, chicken, vegetables, and snails.

This cooking class is $70 per person and after cooking in a social setting with other guests you will get to enjoy your hard labor with some Valencian red and white wine.

Paragaea – Greece

Located in Parga, Greece, Paragaea is a perfect cooking experience for anyone who wishes to experience and taste the traditional and delicious Mediterranean cuisine, such as tzatziki, stuffed tomatoes, tiropita and roasted lamb and potatoes.

This culinary workshop will include plenty of traditional Greek dishes, wine, olive oil tasting and the opportunity to learn while having a hands on cooking experience.

Cape Malay Cooking Safari – South Africa

If you are feeling hungry and adventurous, then Cape Malay Cooking Safari, $65 per person, is the perfect cooking class for you. This cooking class takes places in the Bo-Kaap area within Cape Town in South Africa, also known as Malay Quarter.

Before starting the actual cooking portion of the class, you will receive a tour of the historic Malay Quarter with a local. Once you arrive to the kitchen area, which will also be the home of a Bo Kaap family, you will begin to mix masalas, fold samoosas and help cook some Cape Malay curries as well.
