Los Angeles is a city in southern California and is also the center of the United States’ film industry. The city is home to the iconic Hollywood sign, as well as various art museums such as the Getty Art Museum, which features galleries and exhibitions that welcomes millions of visitors per year.

Art Classes in Los Angeles for Kids

A child’s day is full of wonder but if you are the parent, you may not know always know what activities can help capture your child’s imagination and help their mind grow. Consider enrolling your kids on an art course or sign them up to regular art lessons to inspire that sense of wonder further.

There is a great selection of art schools and studios in Los Angeles that cater for children. Here are two that provide lots of different mediums and fun activities to keep small children entertained.

The Children’s Art Studio

The Children’s Art Studio is a school committed to children’s visual education since 1997.  The school aims to provide a safe space for young artists to grow and discover their inner creative world. Classes are designed for kids from 18 months to 12 years of age.

One fun class is called the Parent/Child Art Class, designed for kids from 18 months to 3 and a half years of age. This class brings together the parent and the child to create artworks using paint, markers, oil pastels, oil paint, acrylic paint, and other art making supplies.

Another fun class is the Mixed Media class for 5 to 7 year olds which teaches children to observe the life around them to put into their art and gives them a chance to try various media, such as sculpting.

Purple Twig

If you are looking for a variety of art classes for kids in Los Angeles, the Purple Twig is the place to be. Classes here are just under 1 and a half hours long and can be taken on a one-time basis. Family classes are also offered which is a great occasion to hang out as a family during a weekend or school holiday.

Classes begin with a warm-up activity such as the reading of a story, followed by the introduction of the main art project for the class. A unique class you can take here is called Amazing Animals. It is aimed toward 3 to 4-year-olds and features animals such as lions, tigers, and bears. Young artists get a chance to learn about these animals by creating masks, sculptures, and even construct homes for these animals.

Drawing and Painting Art Lessons

Drawing and painting are the most popular mediums when it comes to art lessons. Every great artist usually starts their arts education by practicing technical skills in portrait painting, figure painting, landscape painting, color mixing, basic drawing and more.

Raminfard School of Arts

Established by Daniel Raminfard in 2000, the Raminfard School of Arts has the mission to share the joy of artistic creation with as many people as possible. Daniel is supported by two other artists and painters – Abigail and Amanda.

Lessons at this studio are available in group and private formats. Both day and night courses are also available so you can find the best time that fits into your schedule. Examples of fine arts workshops you can join include Draw the Head, which teaches you the basics of drawing the human head from life, and Color Theory, which teaches students the basics of color theory.

Ann Bridges Art Studio

This studio was founded in 2008 by long-time art instructor, Ann Bridges, as its name suggests. Ann wanted to create a space where students can feel like they are in a studio compared to a formal instructional setting.

True to her visions, classes at Anne Bridges Art Studio are small and individualized. Students can choose to focus on either painting or drawing and a special Life Drawing course is offered every Saturday morning so students can hone their technical life-drawing skills.

Clay and Ceramic Art Lessons

One place where you can take pottery courses is the Full-Circle Pottery studio. A variety of courses are offered here including private and group lessons. Beginner students can take lessons on how to use the pottery wheel and all classes cost under $50 per session.

Another place where you can take pottery courses is in the Echo Ceramics studio. A beginner course is only four weeks long, giving you just enough time to try this craft and decide if you would like to continue learning. Open hours are also available during your four-week session so you can come in on your own time to practice your craft.

Once you move on to the intermediate classes, the class length increases to eight weeks, giving you enough time to study the art in depth. Class sizes are small and consist of no more than ten students, so you can easily request help from the instructor at all times.
