The history of the City of Houston can be traced back to the 1830s when real estate promoters, Augustus Chapman and John Kirby Allen arrived in Texas and sought land to develop a new town. The site they chose is the place where the modern City of Houston lies at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou.

They chose to name the city after Sam Houston, a key character from history, who was the hero of the Battle of San Jacinto and a man whom they both admired greatly.

Houston has since grown to be the most populous city in Texas and the fourth most populous city in the US. Greater Houston is also the fifth largest metropolitan area in the USA.
