Catalina Foothills artist and architect teaches drawing skills in her home studio

My methodology is first establishing what the student wants to learn. I think it's important to also first put art in its context of culture and society by discussing "what is art?" This helps the student first understand if there is anything beyond a technical skill that he/she wants to achieve. Beyond that, art is looking and learning by doing, whether it is painting or drawing so while I have basic beginning drawing skills, it is not necessary that we start with these if there is a preference to dive right into a project.

I started giving art lessons through an art library system when I was 12 and have been teaching in one way or another ever since. My degrees are in Art History with a focus in Decorative Arts, developed after a summer study abroad with Parsons in Paris. Later degrees in architecture and historic preservation developed a good sense of design. I achieved success in those fields, but the current project is a second children's book. I wrote and illustrated the first book, Prairie Pug. My method will depend upon the student and what/how they want to learn. But, with drawing, we will have to learn to 'see.'
