« I've known Theo for almost 7 years now. He is a passionate and enthusiastic scientist with excellent knowledge of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. He was possibly the highest achieving student I have seen in terms of academic performance, before heading into the industry where he has been working for several years. I think he will make an excellent SuperProf thanks to his passion for the subject and his ability to break down complicated topics to their fundamentals, before building back up to help solve a problem. »

Chemistry Masters graduate with top grades offering Chemistry and Maths lessons up to degree level in Northampton. Friendly, patient, and affordable!

Methodology

I am a Master of Chemistry, and as such would be happy to teach at all levels up to degree level. I am friendly and approachable, and take time to make sure something is understood before moving on to more complicated ideas. My techniques would be centred around 1-to-1 discussion, going over a subject from the ground up to make sure there are no gaps in knowledge/understanding, having regular question and answer sessions, setting practice questions to complete at the end of sessions and as homework, and providing source material, notes and references for the student to go over in their own time should they wish to expand their understanding further. I have always enjoyed teaching people who want to learn, and I am always very friendly and patient with students who may be struggling. I am very talkative and interactive, and much of my teaching methodology is focused around positive 1-on-1 interaction and the gradual building of understanding, starting simple and leading slowly to more difficult subject matter when the student is comfortable.

Background

I am a highly knowledgeable Master of Chemistry, currently working as a Technical Manager for a plastics company. I received oustanding results at university, and during my course I was regularly asked to help tutor fellow students in my class and help them to conceptualise and understand difficult ideas, mechanisms and processes. I have an excellent grasp of organic chemistry, including knowing a large range of reagents and conditions for specific reactions, a fantastic understanding of complicated reaction mechanisms, the theory and practice of NMR spectroscopy (and other techniques), organo-metallic chemistry, stereochemistry, chirality, photochemistry, and many other related subjects. I also have good knowledge of other broad areas of chemistry, including inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and now polymer chemistry. I have an excellent grasp on basic and more complex mathematical principles and theories, including geometry, algeabra, thermodynamics, kinetics, crystal field theory, and polymer design, and can practice them on paper and discuss and teach them with confidence. I have been praised for my ability to teach before, and would love to be able to once again share my passion for this subject with minds hungry to learn, who perhaps haven't found confidence for the subject in themselves yet.

Rates

Transportation Fee : $5
Rate for online lessons : $19/h

Depending on the difficulty of the subject matter, I may raise or lower rates slightly at my discretion. Rates would be discussed and established with the student/parent before booking is finalised.

Theodore's resume

Personal Summary: I am a highly skilled and knowledgeable MChem graduate and polymer chemist, who is comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. I strive for the best results in what I do, and I believe this is evident in the successes of the work and research undertaken by myself whilst studying for my master’s degree in chemistry, and in my current employment. I’ve worked for the past 2 years in the plastics industry, formulating and bringing new polyurethane and water based emulsion products to market for use in construction, as well as developing new photopolymers for the fast-growing 3D printing industry.

Chemistry Skills:
> 4 years of experience with various analytical machines and techniques, including NMR, IR and UV-VIS spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and various chromatography techniques such as TLC, column chromatography and tandem GC-MS and LC-MS methods.
> Over 2 years of experience developing novel resins, photopolymers and coating/binder formulations for use in construction, as well as for the 3D printing industry.
> Well trained in a chemical laboratory environment (e.g. health and safety procedures, COSHH forms, handling chemicals and glassware etc.)
> Excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of organic chemistry, polymer chemistry and analytical techniques/spectroscopy (as well as other areas of chemistry).
> Able to take the lead and contribute greatly to group projects and research.

General Skills:
> Motivated problem solver and critical thinker.
> Work well under pressure and keep to deadlines.
> Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
> Hard working team member.
> Ability to conceptualise and simplify complicated ideas.

Personal Achievements

> I performed excellently at university, consistently finishing top of my class for my second, third and fourth/final years, and winning several awards for outstanding achievement in my subject. I was also awarded the prize for best dissertation project in my final year, for which I achieved a grade of 87%. I scored a grade point average of 81% over all 24 mod¬¬¬¬ules of my degree.
> I have successfully published a research paper in Organic and Bimolecular Chemistry. This research involved the development of potential topical treatments for skin infections through the small scale synthesis and application of light activated, functionalized azo dye molecules. (See “Publications” for paper reference).
> I’ve brought several new products to market for my current employer and have a very good knowledge of product design and manufacturing of polyurethane/acrylic resins, coatings and photopolymers.
> I was a long standing member of the National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth, (NAGTY), now called Young, Gifted and Talented, (YGT), during secondary school.

Previous Employment

March 2016 – Present Day
Spectrum Chemicals Limited, Doddington Road, Wollaston, Northamptonshire

– Technical Laboratory Manager and Development Chemist.

In this role I have:

> Built upon my knowledge of polyurethane chemistry, the calculations surrounding these reactions and the formulation and application of resins produced from various polyols/polyamines and commercially available diisocyanates and acrylates.
> Designed, developed, formulated, tested and brought to market several successful products, including a ‘Gorilla Glue’ alternative, a 1 pack binder for rubber crumb systems, a 1 pack non-yellowing binder for resin-bound stone carpet systems, a rust removal product, a water-based matt/gloss finish 2 pack coating for wood/metal surfaces, as well as several new oligomers and inks for use in 3D printing.
> Designated and managed product specifications for production and quality control, and re-wrote and improved all Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for QC testing and production.
> Managed the laboratory, i.e. kept track of reagent and equipment stock, carried out all QC testing and managed all development projects, liaised with suppliers in order to receive fresh samples for development work, and handled any technical queries from production/customers.
> Kept track of production and QC ‘Key Performance Indicators’ (KPI’s) such as batch loss/gain, and deviation from product specifications.
> Managed production stock for our biggest customer and liaised with the customer/production to ensure no deficits ever occurred in materials used for the larger batches.
> Liaised with production personnel and provided technical support and assistance when required, in order to help resolve any production and quality issues.

May 2012 – July 2015
Onestop Store, 38-40 Moor Lane, Preston, Lancashire

– Sales Assistant

In this role:

> I grew my knowledge of the retail industry and how best to serve and accommodate customers.
> I learned the value of presentation, always keeping a tidy and smart appearance so as to maintain a professional look and represent the company well to our customers.
> I was fully trained on the till, and stepped up on more than a few occasions to cover managerial jobs such as counting the safe float, taking stock checks, removing and counting the ATM and locking the store at closing time.
> I learned the importance of delegation in the work place; prioritising jobs to the people with better skills to complete the job. This reinforced my ability to lead, as well as helped the shop to run more efficiently and profitably.

Interests and Hobbies:
I have a passion for studying organic chemistry and I practice the theory daily. I enjoy listening
to music, playing video games and going on long walks. I have enjoyed performing on stage in
drama productions in the past, and I love to read books and take every opportunity I get to read
and learn.
