I have learned that the best way to teach music is to do it slowly and to do what feels right for each student. No two classes can be the same. That said, I always start with music basics--some theory, how to read the clefs, notation--before going into teaching any physical techniques. In terms of structure, I make sure to build a solid base of knowledge before moving forward. I also try to assign some kind of homework for between lessons to go over at the beginning of the next. Through all of this, I try and keep my students smiling. Frustration is important in learning, but learning cannot happen if you stop wanting to be there.
I gave lessons for a short time in my senior year of high school and have given some intermittently since. I began learning the piano when I was 5 and have continued to add to my musical training and repertoire in the years since.
