I work best with high school students and younger, working on general programming languages. I approach each lesson with a general itinerary and an explanation of the subject of the lesson. I emphasize on learning from mistakes and relating the subject to the student.
I have been a volunteer mentor and teacher for the past three years while working on getting my bachelor's degree in computer science. I also have been playing volleyball for the past 7 years and my leadership skills of working with a team also transfer how to effectively teach and explain a subject.
During my senior year of high school 2018, I assisted a coach who was new to volleyball as well as provided helpful tips, exercises, and of course encouragement to the players.
I taught 6th graders at River Oak Charter School how to code in the language HTML and CSS as my high school senior project. I accumulated over 60 hours of teaching and preparing lessons, and enjoyed every second! My focus of the project was to encourage the use of teaching computer science at an earlier age, and the outcome was that an overwhelming majority of the class was now interested in pursuing computer science in the future.
During the summer of 2019, I was a teacher for a boys and girls club on the Coyote Valley Reservation, teaching robotics and computer science. We used Sphero robots, code.org, and myfuture.net from which most of my lessons plans were derived from. I learned to work with a wide range of kids, ages 6-12 years old and I learned how to work efficiently and remain organized in a disordered space due to the construction of the Reservation. I also helped girls carry out science projects in the maker-space at Sonoma State University. I also lead coding activities using code.org in which the girls were able to create their own coding project, as well as teach a handfull of girls how to make scrunchies from scratch.
