Creative Writing Mentorship & Development Program For Young Writers Ages 8-24 (Melbourne)

Methodology

This program is designed for young writers from ages 8–24 with an interest in telling stories, no matter the medium. It features a highly-flexible lesson plan based on the student’s requirements.

There’s no one way to write. There’s no one way to teach somebody how to write. Even with all the knowledge in the world, there’s no way to guarantee somebody will ever be a published author. Think of me as the strange old man in the cave who gives our protagonist the sword and the map. I am not magic, and I can't reshape the universe, but I can give you the tools you need to become a great storyteller.

It begins with knowing the fundamentals, and understanding the individual pieces of what makes a story. Then, through a combination of reading your work, giving feedback, and discussing your strengths, weaknesses and ambitions, we can focus on different areas of storytelling, taking it one week at a time. Writing is a journey. The only way you can truly get better is to write. And write. And write. You’ll encounter new problems all the time. Frustrations. Days when it feels like the words won’t come. We’ll work through those problems as they present themselves.

This isn’t a classroom; it’s a mentorship. Whether you simply want to learn how a story is made, or you want to try a new hobby, or write one book, or write books for the rest of your life, we will tailor the lesson plan to suit your needs. And don’t forget: the craft of storytelling is applicable whether you’re writing books, comics, film, television, games, theatre, music, or simply telling someone what you did yesterday. Understanding story has the ability to enrich countless aspects of your life.

Background

I am a young writer (21) who was struck by an intense passion for writing at around the age of eight, and spent the next decade of my life devilishly devoted to learning everything I could -- and writing EVERYTHING. I am extremely passionate about telling stories and, will not only do my best to inspire you, but will be your biggest cheerleader as you progress through your writing journey. It can be insanely difficult, but it can also be the most rewarding thing in the world.

I have completed thirteen novels, accumulating more than 1,200,000 words of writing. I have also ghostwritten several books and have worked as a freelance editor for a number of clients. My experience in storytelling extends into writing for games, film, theatre and music.

Brandon's resume

I have participated in a number of writing courses at the Australian Writers' Centre, as well as an exclusive mentorship with Toolkits, hosted by Express Media. In 2016, I was one of five writers shortlisted for the "John Marsden & Hachette Australia Prize" which came with a short masterclass. For the most part, I learned directly from authors themselves, gathering information from author lectures, podcasts and books.
