A B.A. in English and Masters of Library Science do not explain why I excel as a tutor: it is because I have deep experience as a writer and editor, plus experience teaching and tutoring. I know the subject and I know the students.
Six years teaching Asian-American students at Northwest Xilin (xilinchinese.com), a parent-funded academy serving the affluent Chicago suburbs of Schaumburg, Palatine, and Hoffman Estates. I specialize in Middle School Enrichment and SAT/ACT/PSAT Preparation.
Success coaching six students whose high scores on Chicago Public Schools' Selective Enrollment High School Exam qualified them for admission to the top schools of their choice.
I have tutored since 1974 (college freshmen), and worked with high school students in an ACT remedial lab at Niles West High School in Fall 2000. Corporate work was spent as a content writer and editor for Chase Bank, a PR firm, North America's largest trade-magazine publisher, and several textbook publishers. I also did job counseling and college-readiness tutoring with Chinese, Vietnamese, and Bosnian students. I am now a part-time librarian serving K-8 (Niles Public Library) when not tutoring.
Sept. 2010 – May 2013: Tutor Doctor (tutordoctor.com)
I worked one-on-one with elementary, middle, and high school students in their homes in the Northwest Chicago suburban area to improve their command of Language Arts (Grammar, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension and Writing).
October 2010 – Sept. 2016 : Writing Tutor at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management (lfgsm.edu)
Over 100 students were referred to me by the Admissions Dept. and faculty, having been identified as being “at risk” in terms of not having demonstrated the writing skills necessary to complete required papers in the MBA program. Most students were born outside the U.S., and I worked on all aspects of writing intervention – grammar, vocabulary, sentence and paragraph structure, thesis and concluding statements – both in-person with small groups or online with individuals via Skype and Webex.
Sept. 2011 – Present: Northwest Xilin Community School (xilinchinese.com)
This community organization serves several hundred Chinese-American families in the Schaumburg/Palatine/Hoffman Estates area, and operates several dozen academic, art, and athletic classes from Noon to 5:00 p.m. on the leased campus of Schaumburg’s Conant High School. I teach one academic enrichment class for middle school students and two SAT/ACT prep classes (two hours each).

I have worked with Paul as a co tutor for over five years. Paul focuses on reading and language arts skills while I work on math. Prior to that I have been friend with Paul and his wife another ten years for a total of 15. Paul manages to be a gifted teacher bringing competence, respect, creativity and understanding to each of his students. Everyone of his students has made gains on their tests (ACT, SAT) or were successful in gaining admission to a selective program.
Mr. Foxworth helped my daughter multiple times with writing and editing application essays for high school and then college. He took his time to recognize her strengths and weaknesses to personalize his teaching process. My daughter Hanna was comfortable with openly talking about the subject areas with Mr. Foxworth knowing that he is understanding and respectful. Her essays went from being good to exceptional after working with him. I am definitely looking foreword to working with Paul again with my younger son when the need comes. I highly recommend him as a tutor/teacher.
Paul has tutored two of my children. My oldest son was tutored for ACT prep and greatly improved his score in English and writing - the portions that needed improvement. He secured the score he was looking for with Paul's help. During his senior year of high school Paul help him with his college applications and essays. Paul's guidance and support were so helpful and greatly reduced stress for me and my son!
Recently I needed Paul's services again with help tutoring my 8th grade daughter for the Selective Enrollment exam for CPS high school. She enjoyed working with Paul and her confidence going in to testing was greatly improved with Paul's help.
Paul has been tutoring my daughter, age 13, for about two years in Social Studies and Language Arts. He is very knowledge in those subjects and very accommodating to busy schedules of student and parents. We are very pleased with his work and how our daughter is learning under his coaching. We highly recommend Paul if you are looking for a tutor in these subjects.
