I believe the role of education is to prepare students for the world outside of school. Children have been given more responsibilities at a younger age in today's society. In order to provide education to these children, schools need to be a place where students, as well as their parents, feel comfortable. Students need to feel safe and be able to voice their opinion without judgement from their peers or their teacher. Starting the year off, talking with the students about respect of others and of themselves should help curb the problem of judgement. Parents need to feel comfortable enough to be able to talk with their student's teacher and administration. To get an atmosphere where students and parents can be comfortable, teachers need to be open-minded and willing to communicate. if this cannot be accomplished, learning at home will not happen. Without good communication, teachers and parents will not be on the same path to helping the student to a better education. Along with communication with parents, teachers to be open with the students. They need to set clear, reasonable expectations at the beginning of the year and stick to them. Teachers need to help the students develop responsibilities and ownership of the classroom. Including the students in the planning of their school year helps the students feel like they own the curriclum. If they have a say in what they learn, students may be more interested in learning.
The teacher in a classroom should guide the students to the information they need, not just give it to them. If students can discover the information, it will stick with them longer. Let them discover the information, by being hands-on in the classroom. Give them projects and let them teach each other. This will help them become more productive members of society where they live. By being productive, educated, members of society, they can give back to their community and those around them in a positive way.
