In order to teach reading and comprehension strategies effectively I always begin with stating the objective and purpose of the lesson. For example, "Today we are going to learn how to read words that end with a silent-e. We are going to learn this to improve our reading fluency." Then, I will explain the strategy, "For many words, the vowel says its name when there is a silent-e on the end. Then, I give an example. Like in the word RIDE. We hear the I in RIDE say its name! If we take the silent-e off of RIDE, we have the word RID. In the word RID the I does not say its name, it says its normal sound!" Then I work with the student(s) to come up with other words that have a silent-e on the end. Then, the students are given an informal assessment or formal assessment depending on the density of content or strategy learned.
I have a Bachelors in Art History and a Graduate Certificate of Teaching Elementary Education. I have worked in public Title 1 schools for 2 years now as an Instructional Assistant and a Substitute. I estimate I have worked with 200-300 students in whole classroom setting and small group.
My rates are $19/hourly. Most reading lessons only last 1 hour, unless I am teaching comprehension which easily requires 1.5 hours for a lesson.
Depending on a student's beginning reading level, learning how to read and comprehend effectively takes a lot of dedication and multiple sessions.
