Experienced Secondary and Post-secondary educator, who holds a Master's degree in the Area of Linguistics with a minor in Applied Linguistics from the University of Kansas, Lawrence USA.
I worked 18 years at the Teachers'College of Maturin , Venezuela between the years of 1977 and 1994 when I retired. I came to the USA to work as a Spanish/ESL Teacher; I have been doing so since 1999 at all levels: Pre-K to Secondary School levels. I am committed to provide my students with the skills that will help them become successful and ready for our globalized world. Therefore I use communicative approaches, which guarantee the USE of the language followed by a thorough study of its linguistic corpus in both its oral and written expression. Likewise, I promote this language study, conjugated with the culture that supports the language use in different socio-cultural environments by using the technological resources available.I am bi-culturally founded with an open mind which has helped me easily understand others learning English or Spanish. I do believe in having my students doing things with their target language to become socially and academically fluent in using that language for their own success, satisfaction and at the same time, for helping them develop an open attitude to embrace languages and their cultures with joy and enthusiasm.
I started teaching English as a Foreign Language back in 1969 at the secondary level (including whta it is labeled here as : Middle and High school levels). Then, I participated in complying with a round of hiring activities , which included among other things: interviews, class presentations, demonstration of performance assessments for secondary and college students as well. I did pass all of my hiring steps and began my work as an EFL professor at the Teachers' College of Maturin (Universidad Pedagogica Libertador, Maturin Site, ) back in 1977. If I would count all of my students since 1969 till 1994, when I retire to come to the USA to work as an Spanish/ ESL Teacher in 1999 till now, I would have to say more than several thousands of them! I know as a fact that many of students at the secondary level have become college graduates, several of them with post-secondary degrees in Venezuela, USA, England, Spain and other countries. As of now I have some of my former students contacting me via the Social Networks/Media. I did have students that came to me knowing nothing about English or Spanish; no language knowledge and no cultural idea about the places where these languages were spoken. Their vision of the world was reduced to their most immediate life/home/school environments. However, after they took my classes, some of them wanted to study the target language in a more direct way by travelling to the places where these languages were spoken. Some of them fulfilled this goal, others got a better picture by studying the language as a future career! As of now, I have been able to see my ESL beginner students grow and start being very participating in their regular grade level class. They' are flourishing, and I am very proud of them!!
