Methodology

Hello my name is Elon Nichols. I attended Ohio Domincan and Columbus State majoring in Early Childhood education.I am an LLI reading teacher for Columbus city schools in Columbus,Ohio. I also have a certificate in LLI reading.I have been doing LLI for 5 years now. I help students who are struggling in basic reading and phonics.

Background

Have been teaching reading for five years and I have been giving tutoring lessons for five years as well. I have taught probably 100 students throughout the years. My students have achieved going up 20 points on state reading tests as well. After my students work with me they become more comfortable and comfident in their reading abilities.

Volunteer Service: I volunteered at Columbus Area Inc., as a mentor tutoring children with mental illnesses. I assisted the program manager in educating children on AOD issues. I also acquired research skills in the mental health field, which included the diagnosis of schizophrenia, borderline, and paranoid personalities. I was responsible for accurate documentation and meeting deadlines. I have also volunteered at Volunteers of America Youth Education Center. At the center I educated on life skills supervised and provided social skill building, tutored in reading, writing, and math. I also have experience as a tutor at Academy Kids Learning Center. At the learning center I tutored pre-school aged children in reading, writing, and math.


Skills: I have skills in working with children for four years. This includes working as a program assistant as well as an acting site director for the YWCA. I worked with children who have mental and behavioral issues such as bipolar disorder, ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers Disorder, and MR. Also while working at the YWCA I have trained new hires, and facilitated groups. I also have obtained my First Aid, CPR, Communicable Disease, Child Abuse prevention certifications as well. I have also obtained a certification in working with children who have ADHD, Aspergers syndrome and autism.

Recently I was also an instructional assistant and tutor at a charter high school called The Charles School. At the school I tutored the students in English, writing, reading, physical science, biology, history, and any other subjects the students need help in. While at the Charles School I also worked with Somali students to help increase their language skills in addition to improving their academic progress. In addition to this I also have experience volunteering in a Columbus Public school at Parkmoor Elementary School as a Student Assistant/Student Teacher through Ohio Dominican University. As an assistant I led projects, helped the children with daily class assignments, I also did testing, and other various assignments that I was asked to do.

I have also worked at St. Vincent Family Center as an Adaptive Behavior Specialist and pre-k teacher. As an adaptive behavior specialist and teacher I worked with children who are pre-school aged that have severe emotional and mental health disorders such as bi-polar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and paranoid personalities. My position also entails assisting the lead teacher and I lead two one hour groups a day that focused on how the children feel, anger management, bullying, friendship and problem solving skills. I also have obtained a Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Certificate as well while employed at St. Vincent.

Currently I am employed with Columbus City Schools. I was working at Avondale Elementary School as a Certified LLI Kindergarten Reading Specialist and an Instructional Assistant. During the 2015-2016 school years I was an Instructional Assistant and LLI reading specialist at Moler Elementary School and at Watkins Elementary School. While working as a Certified LLI Kindergarten Reading Specialist at Avondale, Moler, and Watkins I provided daily early reading intervention to kindergarten students who are preforming at a low academic reading level. I also pulled four LLI reading groups daily to work intensively with the children who were struggling in reading. In addition to being an LLI reading interventionist I assisted the teacher with the children’s daily tasks such has preparing for dismissal, supervising the children during library time, computer lab, leading STEM activities and other large group learning activities in the classroom. I also prepare lesson plans and I have had the privilege to teach and lead the whole class in reading, math, and social studies lessons.

While being employed at Columbus City schools I have also obtained an Educational Aide Licensure which allows me to work in the classroom and I have obtained an LLI Taining Certificate to teach LLI reading groups. I have also been trained in test proctoring. I have completed the training and signed the security agreement in order to test proctor. The tests that I have proctored are the PARRC Test, OAA, and The Ohio Assessment Test for elementary school students. I also have a second job at Central Community House where I am a Reading Education Coordinator and Youth Leader.

In addition to my skills I also communicate and work well with other people. I work under pressure and I am a team player. I am able to meet deadlines and pay attention to details. I am a good worker and learn quickly. My other skills are in Accounting. I have obtained a Technical Certificate of Banking and Accounting from Northwest Career Center and the Ohio Department of Education as well. Some of my skills include, Accounting (Computerized & Book Entry), Word Processing (MS Word), and Telephone Skills, Keyboarding 55 w.p.m. Internet Tools (Netscape Navigator), Spread Sheets (MS Excel), Office Procedures, Office Tools, DELL Computers, and 10 key Calculator.
