I believe in learning for the sake of expanding the mind and opening doors to the possibilities offered by a larger world- something which I believe has been pushed to the wayside of modern public education. My educational philosophy is grounded in the belief that a teacher should be more than an authority figure who pushes students through the system in hopes that they pass an exam. The main responsibility of a teacher should be to aid their students in finding their limitless potential and to show their students how to ride that potential to new heights maybe never before conceivable.
I believe in using creativity to break out of the conventional methods of education. If a teacher can teach a lesson perfectly well with chalk, marker, posters, a song and dance… they should use any methods at their disposal to create an engaging lesson. There are no lines to color in when it comes to teaching.
I believe that in order to learn a language, students need to understand the culture behind the regions where that language is spoken and how the people of that culture think, behave, and form opinions.
The culture of France is reserved, passionate, assertive in their opinions, disciplined, and imaginative. Her people are knowledgeable of the world around them and how and where they stand in relationship to others. My preferred methods of teaching the French language revolve around the central premise of creating a mentality in the students which leads to the development of a francophone self. Language is a defining aspect of a person’s identity, and each language creates a different way of thinking for the speaker.
I believe in the assertions that acquiring a language is more effective than consciously learning a language and the target language should be used frequently. I plan to adapt the ideas of the communicative approach as I see fit with other methodologies such as grammar-translation, combing the old with the new in terms of pedagogy.
I believe that taking French in high school was something that completely changed my world because it opened it.
Learning a new language is a crazy sensation- especially when you find yourself truly understanding it. New parts of your brain open. Your conceptions of yourself, your reality, your point of view in general… are completely altered, and there is this new notion that your understanding of the world may never be the same. You realize how small you truly are, and simultaneously realize how big you truly can become.
I believe in the strength of the individual and that foreign language education is the perfect medium for students to discover who they really are and where they stand in the world around them.
