I work by assessing the level of the student in whichever subcategory we are studying (vocabulary, grammar, or reading and writing) and working this into our time frame (short-term tutoring, as for a specific assignment or upcoming essay, or long-term tutoring for general reading/writing skills and comprehension, vocabulary memorization, and grammar/sentence structure) to help us focus on the student's greatest strengths and weaknesses, and find where we'll be devoting most of our time. For vocabulary in younger students, I prefer to drill Latin roots (as applicable), as it's efficient and effective in broadening and deeply understanding vocabulary. For writing and reading comprehension skills for students of all ages, I tend to provide correct and incorrect examples that I create or have pulled from other works and help students work through why each example is correct or incorrect to inspire creativity and good technique. Most importantly, I work through positive reinforcement, encouraging students to applaud their strengths, grow as writers, and be excited by learning and studying English and literature!
I am an undergraduate honors Comparative Literature and English student at UCLA with two years experience in private and group tutoring of English (grammar, vocabulary, reading, and writing). I have had over ten individual students and tutored groups of over forty students, ages ranging from 4 to 21. My specialty is construction and editing of essays and creative writing (including grammar, diction, style, and coherence/flow) but I am happy to tutor any area of English and English literature.
