« Perfect! Erika is currently tutoring my grade 7 daughter, helping her to expand her art skills and grow her confidence. It's been amazing to see how my daughter's work has developed in just one or two lessons. Erika approaches each lesson with a clear plan and goal for what she would like my daughter to achieve. She has a very calm way about her and is both inspiring and encouraging. We could not be happier. Thank you, Erika! »

Freelance artist teaching and giving advice on illustration, drawing, and painting in Burnaby, BC.

Methodology

Hello,

My class parts from the idea that ANYONE can learn how to draw with the right approach.

These classes are deemed for beginner, intermediate level students and anyone who wishes to work on their observational skills.

Besides the technical side of the class, I also focus on building the confidence and knowledge through MAKING. I honor the effort and bravery of those who wish to learn or to perfect their drawing skills by designing the lessons around their learning style and interests.

You can find my ILLUSTRATION WORK at erikaim.com or at instagram.com/erikadecanella/

Background

I've been teaching people of all ages since early 2016 but started one-on-one classes in April 2017. Since that time, I've had more than fifteen regular students and taught several workshops.
Since my class also focuses on helping the students to feel comfortable and confident about their practice, I seek to help them work out those natural insecurities that come with art-making. This allows the learning process to be smoother and less intimidating. One of my main goals is to help students gain confidence in their own developing skills.

In the past, I've met with my students at the library and even at parks and public spaces (especially for gesture exercises, fast sketching, and urban drawing). Although having the class at their own home is convenient for most, my place is an option as well.

See you soon,

Erika Medina

Kelli

Perfect! Erika has been a wonderful teacher for our kids. I extended our time together because they love the class and Erika so much.

Samuel

Excellent! I needed an art teacher to give me some accountability for a personal practice in drawing, and to help push my art to another level. My main goal in working with Erika was to learn how to draw faces and, more importantly, to learn *how to learn* drawing.

Erika did a great job of assessing my level and providing weekly assignments for me to work through. We worked together on Skype for an hour at each go, going over my week's work and then diving into the next subject. Her feedback was always well-reasoned and presented in such a way that it was easy to understand and grow from. Plus, she's very professional and just a good person, which makes working with her a joy.

I'd recommend her to anyone picking up a new skill in art or picking up art in general.

Estefanía

Talented young lady with lots of experience and great attitude. She is a great teacher!

Eduardo

She really takes care of your technique, even tough I am able to choose the topics I want to work at, she always finds a way to do it while explaining a new topic, or just reinforcing what we've learnt so far. She is also amazing at pin-pointing the most amazing details of my work, nothing escapes from her. I'm a million times better because of her. Thank you!!!

Interview with Erika

QUESTION 01 | 05
When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Erika — I've drawn since I was little. However, since I was planning to become a coroner, art was really a hobby for me. I chose graphic design a year before applying to university, but I switched to fine arts and illustration after a semester. It just made more sense to me.
QUESTION 02 | 05
What makes you passionate about your subject?
Erika — Knowing that drawing and painting is a field where you can keep learning for the rest of your life is very exciting to me. Also, I love finding visual ways to represent stories or ideas.
QUESTION 03 | 05
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Erika — I am determined to prove that anyone can learn how to draw.
QUESTION 04 | 05
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Erika — My mentor Javier Ramos Salazar, who is a hyper-realistic painter and an amazing human who is both wise and humble.
QUESTION 05 | 05
What are your keys to success?
Erika — Patience, perseverance and courage
