I will get the most solid foundation for my students. Teaching the basics but in a way that will assist them in the future if they so take on piano professionally. Bad habits will actively be avoided so that playing for longer and without strain is possible. I will shine a light on them the things that I have learnt through experience of many years in music. It will be in a way that they can digest and understand so that they play the piano understanding why certain things such as rhythmic accent is so important. That means they will be able to utilize the skills learnt to magnify and sculpt the emotions in music in a way that they see fit.
Basically they will have an absolutely solid foundation to progress further in music.
My life always had great timings; right things happening at the right time. My journey in music began when I took an interest in piano to make myself look good. I understand it's not the most legitimate reasons to start but the effort and interest I put in to it inspired people around me to fund me monetarily as a community. (particularly the people at church)
I am very grateful for my first teacher for teaching me a solid basic foundation in music and piano which later on served me greatly. The reason I said that the timings are great in my life is because after my first teacher's husband passed away I had moved to a teacher who seemed to be stagnant in teaching. Who seemed to neglect the musicality I was looking for and solely focused on the grades in music we were doing at the time.
But thankfully her studio had to be renovated and she referred me to her own teacher. At this point in my musical journey, I was learning a new piece of music every single week and I felt that my journey would be stagnant at the current place. So her teacher was an absolutely blessing because he recognised something in me and through series of musical challenges he presented he decided that I am out of his scope for teaching.
This is when I was referred to Sheffield Music Academy. What a great news! I was excited and nervous at the same time. So we did apply and I managed to get an interview there. I do not know if it was the nervousness on the day or my mind was racing but I had left all of my sheet music on the bus. But the interesting fact is the sheet music I was taking were the ones I have actively been playing so I did remember all of them.
So when I arrived at the academy two of the teachers greeted me. In the interview they wanted me to play something for them so I played them the most fantastic sounding and the most confident song I could play them. (It was from studio ghibli by joe hisaishi i forget the name) Incidentally the song had a lot of bass notes descending down chromatically and Frances remarked along the lines of "Did you know that bass notes are a lot louder than the higher notes?" and immediately I knew what she was talking about. "wow, you're right" I said then proceeded to play the same piece but my fingers were a lot lighter on the bass. Afterwards they seemed impressed and I got in to the academy.
My piano teacher was Valentina who I later found out taught master classes at Sheffield University. After few lessons she began figuring out what level I was going to play and she decided we skip all of the grades up to grade 8 and do my diploma in performance. We were working on pieces such as Chopin's etude 13 and Liszt' Liebestraum. We were half way done but because of my immaturity at the time I couldn't cope with all the stress and changes that were hapeening as we were reaching the end of the year.
Music is my passion. And being more mature I can see now. I can see why Valentina told me to do certain things, why she demonstrated the way she did and all the other techniques. I have told valentina this and she was like " Welcome to my ex students club".
