Greek Tutor in London and via Skype

Methodology

Native speaker of Greek with 15 years teaching experience. I am enthusiastic and passionate about offering my students the opportunity to explore the maximum of their potential and achieve success.

My lessons are communicative and include all skills, with emphasis on building up students' confidence in speaking. Due to my 15 years' experience in the education sector, I have the ability to address my students` interests and adapt to their needs from the very first lesson.

As I teach all sorts of nationalities, cultural references is one of the most important components of my lessons as it is proven to be an enjoyable and most effective learning strategy. I have a wide range of material to choose from, including video, audio, flashcards and other games.

My students benefit from my knowledge of music and experience as music educator as I can easily connect learning language to Greek fun songs. This helps them learn and memorise specific language areas, such as vocabulary, phrases, numbers, or idioms.

Online lessons are time and cost effective. They place at the comfort of your house via Skype/FaceTime and you would only need good internet connection! A variety of online tools and interactive material makes the sessions fun and productive. On top of speaking practice, I provide audio and video material for further practice later in all skills.

Learning languages opens up exciting opportunities. Speaking Greek is a challenging, but incredibly rewarding, experience!

Background

Native speaker of Greek and qualified teacher, I have worked as a Greek tutor and GCSE examiner in the UK and Greece. My additional experience as a Violin and EFL teacher in both countries at various language schools and summer schools has given me valuable insight on students' needs and interests.

I have been preparing students from all over the UK for GCSE, AS and A-level exams. All my students have achieved A or A* in their exams (references upon request).

Also, I am delivering lessons to adults who want to start learning or improve their Greek. I have short-term students, who afterwards were able to use their Greek on their very first visit to Greece or Cyprus, as well as long-term students whose progress and enjoyment I am excited to witness in our lessons. They are all passionate about learning the language and in our lessons they are encouraged to use it from the very beginning.

I have British adult students who have been visiting Greece for a number of years and wish to learn/develop their Greek in order to improve their communication with the locals.

One of my students is married to a Greek person and is learning Greek so that she can communicate better with her husband, his family and friends.

With an Italian student who visits Greece regularly for holidays, I have completed most of the chapters from a series of books available for adults and am now planning my own lessons using mainly the internet as a resource. Cultural references, idioms and sayings constitute an essential and fun element in our sessions!

With a boy aged 5, born and raised in London, second generation Greek, I work on building their confidence in speaking mainly through a variety of fun activities, such as games, songs, role-playing, flash-cards, story-telling.

With a boy (Primary) and his sister (Secondary), second generation, I follow the Greek Curriculum and the books provided by the Greek Ministry of Education supplementing with extra material when necessary. All skills implemented.

With an adult of Cypriot origin, I construct my lessons in a way so that speaking covers around 90% of the session. The material we use include everyday prompts, magazines, online websites, videos and we also follow a coursebook especially designed for adults learning Greek as a foreign language.

Perfect! I started my Greek tutoring lessons with Regina in January this year. At first, I had my doubts about taking online tutoring classes as I was unsure how effective it would be but Regina has been such an incredible teacher. She is patient and an expert in her teaching methods. She goes step by step- first covering basics like grammar rules and then starting to incorporate examples and dialogue making it easier for me to follow and remember. When I have questions, she always takes the time to explain and ensure I understand. After I complete exercises, she provides feedback so I can learn from my mistakes. Given these lessons are for my personal benefit, we do not use a structured schedule of topics but instead, she listens to what topics interest me and builds lessons and exercises to accommodate me. She is always willing to be flexible with her schedule and always lets me know in advance in case we need to reschedule for an alternative date. She responds quickly via email and always sends lesson notes for my review which are extremely helpful. I have been having a wonderful experience so far with Regina and looking forward to many more lessons with her!

Perfect! Regina is a talented and inspirational teacher. She started tutoring our daughter for her Greek GCSE exam a month ago. Not only we are extremely pleased with our daughter’s progress in the Greek language but also very impressed by Regina’s enthusiasm and dedication. She is truly gifted in what she does. Regina makes the tutor-student interaction meaningful and effortless from the first moment. She has the talent of tailoring the tutoring to the educational needs and the personality of the student. Her lessons are relevant, effective and a lot of fun! We are very grateful for her help and feel very lucky to have found her!

Regina's response

Evi contacted me about her daughter, Elektra, who wished to prepare for her Modern Greek GCSE exams. Elektra is very clever and a conscientious student. Working with her is a pleasure as she’s fun during the lesson, mature in her thinking and always on time!
I feel pretty confident to say that her progress so far has shown she will achieve excellent marks in her exam.

Regina is easy to work with, and creates very engaging lessons for her students from the start. She truly understands and adapts to the student's learning style, noting the differences between adult and children learners, and paying careful attention to why the student wants to learn. I often don't realise how much I am learning because the lessons are so much fun. I feel increasing confidence not only in my ability to understand and speak Greek, but in my understanding of the country and the culture.

Regina created fun lessons for my children aged 5 and 7. I was amazed to see them from not speaking Greek much to full understanding and making simple sentences within a few months. The games and music she used to motivate and challenge them worked really well! We're all very happy with Regina's teaching and would definitely recommend her!

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Regina as a teacher. The lessons she put together were well-structured and fun, and I really felt that they were personalised to me and my speed of learning. Regina was very patient, and would happily spend longer on the things I struggled with. Having free conversation at the start of the lesson was not only practical but really gave me an indication of how I was progressing with the language. Couldn't be happier!

I can recommend Regina as a teacher. She was very knowledgeable, warm and flexible to my needs as a student. I only had a few lessons before visiting my husband's family in Crete and I wish I had started earlier.

Interview with Regina

QUESTION 01 | 08
Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?
Regina — I am a native speaker of Greek but love exploring the language further. It is due to my own passion for linguistics coupled with inspirational teachers' encouragement. My father who was a Greek teacher passed onto me his inquisitive mind about etymology, colloquialisms, sayings and his eye for detail on grammar.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?
Regina — Ancient and modern Greek culture has so many emblematic characters that it would not do justice to pick just one!

Of course everyone knows Alexander the Great, who contributed to the creation of a Greek language combining different ancient Greek dialects of that time. That language - Ellinistiki Koini- the first language to be common amongst the Greeks, led to Modern Greek as we know it today.

Less well known is Karagiozis - the main character of the Greek shadow theater- who sums up the jokes and slang that make Greek such an interesting and varied language.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?
Regina — Sayings are definitely a special characteristic of the Greek language. I love the fact that in only a few words I am able to refer to history, tradition and customs and at the same time get my meaning across.

Some of my favourites are:

Den horane dyo karpouzia se mia mashali - Two watermelons can't be held in one arm, meaning don't try to do everything at the same time but one thing at a time

Opou laloun polloi kokoroi argei na ximerosei - The sun rises late where there are too many cockerels, meaning too many voices and opinions in a situation slows down efficiency

San tis Artas to giofyri - It's like Arta's bridge, meaning it takes ages for something to be done, with reference to a bridge, which was being built during the day and knocked down every night near the Greek town of Arta
QUESTION 04 | 08
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
Regina — Because it's one of the most ancient languages in the world and the basis of most other languages!
QUESTION 05 | 08
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Regina — Grammar is probably the main difficulty in this language and this is why I work along with music and songs, which can help consolidate conjugation, cases etc and help the student remember it more easily. This way, what could be at times a dull part of learning experience turns into something fun!
QUESTION 06 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
Regina — There are a few Greek words, which sound the same, though have different spelling and meaning, or same spelling but slightly different accent. This can be sometimes confusing even for the native speakers.

What I wish to share with you is the phrase "Prassein aloga", which comes from the Ancient Greek language and means "acting insanely" - however it sounds exactly like "Prassina Aloga" which means "Green Horses"!
When I was child I always pictured green horses in my mind when using the phrase - but I was so wrong, as the Ancient Greeks never actually talked about green horses when they wished to highlight a behaviour that doesn't make any sense!
QUESTION 07 | 08
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
Regina — It might sound strange, but I strongly believe living in a country where a different language is spoken makes you more aware and a better speaker of your own language. I spent 5 years in London, 1 year in Paris and a few months in Spain. In all these places, as I learnt the language, new things became apparent to me about my own language. It's also shocking to realise how many common things we have despite our different cultures and how these similarities are reflected on the languages!
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof in language?
Regina — Years and years of personal passion for exploring the language coupled with language work with children, young people and mature adults has given me invaluable experience in teaching the language and creating fun lessons tailored to my students' needs.

I have prepared students for GCSE exams and have done a few weeks intensive lessons for adults planning on going on holiday to Greece. I find them both important and tackled them with energy and enthusiasm. They both proved rewarding experiences for the students and me.
