Methodology

I have been teaching for 5 years now. I have developed a student-centered methodology in which student is encouraged to find the path to solution rather than simply fed by a solution. Reviews I received from my students show that this method has been very successful.

Background

I a practicing Engineer and an independent researcher in field of structural mechanics and statistical modeling of cities. I have taught more than 10 graduate level courses at UCLA and I have a long background in private tutoring. I enjoy teaching and this is the main reason I do it beside my full time job.

Developed an innovative displacement-based methodology, Lumped Impedance Model, for analysis of retaining structures capable of frequency-domain, linear & nonlinear time-history analyses. The model is verified against FE analysis results performed using ABAQUS. The main advantage of LIM over FEM analysis is its low computational cost which makes it a better fit for performance-based assessments which typically involve numerous time-history analyses. A performance-based framework is proposed based on LIM for analysis and design of retaining walls
California High-Speed Railroad
Engineer, WSP (Parsons Brinckerhoff)
Assisted WSP/California High-Speed Railroad Authority in developing finite element (FE) models using Plaxis 2D and 3D in order to verify design parameters pertaining to soil structure interaction in California High-speed Railroad Design Criteria. For HSR bridges, a unique transitional backfill material was used to ensure safety and passenger comfort while achieving low maintenance cost. Investigated the interaction of this backfill material with the bridge abutment subjected to seismic ground motions using FE models. Developed a simple hyperbolic force-displacement equation (HFD) using results from the FE models. Developed models for culverts and retaining walls to verify assumptions and consequences of the Design Criteria terms. In addition, participated in studying seismic mitigation of bridges using triple-friction pendulum using the well-known bridge engineering program Midas.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) East-Bay Seismic Improvement Program

Performed analysis and designed several structures (AC and DC house pads, retaining walls, em- bedded vaults) and non-structural elements like vent grate, perimeter CMU wall and aluminum fence, and conduits. Developed several finite element models structures supporting for BART mechanical and electric facilities. Numerous customized design was performed as the project sites was scattered over different area near bay area with different geotechnical conditions. Most analyses required accounting for fatigue effects per AASHTO specifications.
San Francisco Waterfront Resilience Project
Structural Analyst, Structus Inc.
Prepared the structural models using SAP2000 and performs push-over analyses considering loads associated with the inertial response of the seismic mass and permanent lateral ground deformation. Based on the push-over analyses, a set of scaled response-spectra corresponding to minimal to life-safety damage states are developed. The scaled response-spectra are used for the comparative risk assessment of critical structures in SF waterfront.The project is managed by Port of San Francisco and is funded by California state government and Federal government.
Biosolid Digester Facilities
Structural Analyst, Structus Inc.
Carried out soil-structure interaction analyses and structural design for pile-supported water and sewer treatment facilities. Given poor geotechnical condition of the construction site a detailed SSI analy- ses was required to account for effects of soil layering and liquefaction. L-Pile and SAP2000 are the primary engineering programs used for soil-structure interaction and structural analysis/design, respec- tively. The project is managed and funded by San Francisco Public Utility Commission (SFPUC).
Civic Center
Structural Analyst, Structus Inc.
The project consists of concept design plan for San Francisco Civic Center’s major public spaces in- cluding Civic Center Plaza, United Nations Plaza, Fulton Street, and immediately adjacent streets and public spaces including below ground spaces at Civic Center Plaza. Developed a 3D finite element (FE) computer model using ETABS for the Civic Center Public Parking Garage. Assisted project engineer in performing full seismic evaluation base on the ASCE 41-13 document.
Single-Family & Multi-Family Housing
Structural Analyst, Structus Inc.
Contributed in structural design and construction administration of several single-family and multi- family housing projects including initial structural design layout, gravity analysis/design, lateral anal- ysis/design. These housing projects are commonly wood structures but depending on the scale and specific requirements of the project, reinforced concrete or steel components are used, especially in the form of moment frame and brace in lateral systems.
