Learn How to Play Guitar as a Beginner... or Master Your Existing Guitar Skills

Methodology

This 30-year veteran teacher, performer and recording artist can get you started as a beginner, or bring you to the next level as an intermediate or advanced player

I have a Masters Degree, and have been performing and teaching for over 35 years. While performing is a delightful experience, I feel equally as enthused when teaching others and helping them grow in their own artistry. Helping my students reclaim their passion for music is a particular joy for me as a teacher.

Background

A musical fixture in the San Francisco Bay Area, 30 year-veteran teacher and performer Rob Grant brings to his teaching a unique, eclectic, acoustic playing style and a patient, tailored- to-your-needs teaching approach that have been appreciated for more than 30 years by students of all ages.

Rob's resume

Versatile performer, recording artist and veteran teacher in school, university and private studio settings, San Francisco Bay Area guitarist Rob Grant translates his passion for sharing the joy of music into fun and highly-individualized lessons.

The guitar is an amazingly verstile instrument, with it’s capacity to produce melody, harmony and percussion, all at the same time. As my student, you’ll be taught to maximize the power of this ever ancient, ever new instrument by learning:
Rhythm (strumming and finger picking)
Melody (playing the “tune” of your favorite songs):
Harmony (the chords and multi-note patterns that build off the melodic leads)

A good player is more than a mechanic who knows positions and technique: A good player knows MUSIC, the theory and patterns that shape the actions of their hands.
Learning an instrument is not just about theory and discipline, its about the joy of expanding and sharing one’s world with other people.

Robin

Rob is the best musician I know, both technically and artistically. He knows everything about music and can play anything. He can also improvise and transpose on the spot. Rob is also cheerful, kind and very patient with kids and adults alike. And you will never find a more reliable person who loves what he does.

I would not hesitate to recommend Rob as a guitar and ukulele instructor for anyone of any age.

Interview with Rob

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did your passion for music begin?
Rob — I have been involved in music since early childhood, starting with school and church choirs, then learning guitar in college, and then becoming a teacher.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Do agree that some instruments are harder to master and, if so, which ones?
Rob — Most certainly! Violin, with its dependence on PERFECT finger positioning and an intimate connection between ear and fingers, makes this instrument among the most difficult to master. Having a perfect sense of pitch is absolutely critical! French horn follows as a close second.
QUESTION 03 | 08
In your opinion, what does it take to be a successful musician?
Rob — Of course, a LOVE of music is essential, but a commitment to constantly advance in skills, even when progress may not be instant, must follow that passion.
QUESTION 04 | 08
It is 2 am in your local bar; which famous musician would you most like to have a conversation with?
Rob — Earl Klugh, Kemmy Ramkin or Eric Clapton would be a good start!
QUESTION 05 | 08
What is your most inspiring experience as a musician?
Rob — Seeing the tangible effect that my performance and teaching has on the lives of people.
QUESTION 06 | 08
In your own opinion, what does it take to be a Superprof?
Rob — Teaching takes the commitment to see EACH student as an individual, with specific and unique needs, unique potential and unique personality.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Describe your best Superprof lesson and explain why it was so great.
Rob — Whether it be through SuperProf or any other teaching experience, the best lessons are those where it is clear that the student not only "does" the task assigned, but understands the subtleties and purpose of the exercise. Our task as teachers is to awaken in the student THEIR OWN passion for the subject, and when that happens, it is the most satisfying WIN/WIN ever!
QUESTION 08 | 08
Finally, if you had to choose a piece of music or album to play on loop for a day, what would it be?
Rob — Earl Klugh or Natalie Cole, but let's not forget Bach and Schubert.
