I believe that the best way to learn animation is simply to start animating. Practical, hands-on experience is far more valuable than any amount of note-taking could be. You don't even need to know how to model anything (but it certainly helps!). If you've never animated before, then I would start you off with my first project, which was spheres, cubes, and cylinders floating around a cone.
