I started music by taking private violin lessons as well as classes in the 4th grade. I was active in church and school choirs for many years and played percussion in my Jr high school band. At the age of 15 I picked up guitar and within 8 months I had my first paying gig.
I teach lessons based on the needs and desires of my students. I help by inspiring with a positive, fun-loving approach. If my student wants to learn to read music, I use that approach or if they prefer learning by ear, we move in that direction.
Singing: By combining many disciplines (including my KRI certification in kundalini yoga), I have developed my vocal technique, "Yoga for the Voice," which gives each student a personalized vocal tune up each time you sing.
My teaching style starts in encouraging ways of introducing the building blocks in becoming a pianist. I like to focus on basic music theory, but also enjoy incorporating music games, interactive piano apps, and other supplemental materials into my students lessons.
I teach every student according to their own musical interests and goals. With beginners I start with the basics of guitar and music theory and quickly move into practical coaching and instruction that gets real time results. I work with advanced students to help them maximize their musical abilities in whatever musical outlet they are working and creating in.
I teach students of all levels the basics of their instrument of choice by selecting the songs they'd like to learn. The best and most entertaining way to pick up an instrument is to see the instrument through the eyes of your favorite musicians. Together we will break down the song so you can play it and ideally learn to write in the style of your favorite musicians if the student has that desire.
I have two Masters in Early Music Singing and Musicology from the Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University) and an BA in Musicology from the University of Chicago. I have extensive experience singing in choir, directing ensembles, and teaching students music of all levels. I have studied voice for 15 years, piano for 13 years, and harpsichord for 2 years.
