During the course of these music lessons, I train students to become technically proficient with their instrument, expand their knowledge of music through music theory, history, and ear training, and help develop their musicality through etudes, chamber music, and solos to reach their highest potential.
I'll usually focus on beginners, and my experience working with elementary-aged students has made me very confident at introducing students to brand-new material. However, I'm happy to take on students of any age and skill level! Whether you're rehearsing an intricate xylophone solo for an audition, or just learning to hold your sticks, I'll be there to help.
I base my lessons on personal growth and FUN! While it does take the basics to learn and grow, I believe music should ultimately be fun. So while exercises will be a part of the lessons we will also take time to learn songs you want to learn so I can help break down songs so you learn thing you want to learn.
I teach all ages and levels. My goal is to show you how to teach yourself. I have been teaching drums & percussion (and music in general) for over twenty years. Lessons are informative and fun. I want students to leave with a sense of achievement.
I like to start easy with the basics, e.g. how to hold a mallet, how to make a full stroke, where to hit the bar. then I can get into how to read music and basic two mallet exercises. Than I can get into more advanced stuff, like playing solos, and four mallet technique.
I base my methodology on instruction that I was given from a variety of instructors from University of Wisconsin Milwaukee as well as the Conservatory of Music. The content of my lessons contain technique, music theory, snare drum instruction and reading music transcriptions,and coordination exercises.
I believe in developing challenging, but obtainable, goals with the student. I encourage strong fundamentals and technique. Along with that, I also push students towards growing as an artist, capable of making intentional artistic decisions.
I expect students to practice in between lessons, and to be honest if something is too hard. I have taught all standards in the past and prefer one to one lessons, to make sure you get the attention you need.
Music is a beautiful combination of the two hemispheres of the brain (I know this isn't real science but take it for metaphor's sake). There is math and perfection of rhythms and harmonies within music, but these patterns mean very little without the creativity of the mind inspiring it to move in certain ways.

I start of with the basics, such as stick holding, simple rock beats (for drumkit), getting familiar with the instrument and reading music. Once the student is comfortable, I progress into more complicated drumming such as different time signatures or swing patterns for drumkit, or learning pieces for mallet percussion or timpani.
