My teaching methodology varies depending on the student. One thing that has always irritated me about a traditional method or approach is that they are too linear; in other words, they lack variety and continuity with respect to the student. If every musician were the same, I would gladly teach method books... However, my method of teaching involves constantly changing my methods to adapt to the individual student's needs rather than teach the same information over and over again. I start the first lesson by asking the student what he/she likes and what he/she expects to learn from myself. From there, I develop a plan by assessing the student throughout the lesson, taking note of strengths, weaknesses, interests, and skills. After the first lesson, I assign individual practice which feels fun for the student as it will always be tailored for the student. I firmly believe that in the first few lessons, the best way to teach is to simply grab the students attention and focus it on something they really enjoy. If the student is advanced, I still love to take a lesson or two and show them their potential vicariously through myself. This is a common Jazz methodology of teaching.
I am a master's student at USC studying music. I have been teaching for over five years and have been playing piano for eleven years. I completed my bachelors degree at Florida State University in Jazz Performance. I currently live in Los Angeles and throughly enjoy time outdoors longboarding, playing tennis, and enjoying nature. I aspire to support a wife and kids with music as my full-time job. I love playing piano, teaching, singing, and composing music to further myself in the music industry. I will do what it takes to succeed because there is no other way.
