Materials Chemist offering Online or In-Person Tutoring to College and High School Students

Methodology

I aim to help high school and college students better comprehend the fine points of both general and advanced chemistry as it will apply to their majors or interests. Chemistry is a complicated field, and many concepts are difficult to grasp at first blush. As such, my lessons will primarily be student-directed. I don't want to waste your time rehashing what you already know, I want to focus on whatever questions and concepts you might be struggling with.

Background

I am a Materials Chemist with a B.S. in Chemistry and Materials Science from the University of Pittsburgh. Throughout my academic career, I have tutored my peers in General Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Biology. Additionally, in college I was employed as a Teaching Assistant for Organic Chemistry and even served as a curriculum developer for a novel Laboratory Safety course.

University of Pittsburgh, Dept. of Chemistry / Research Assistant, Lab of Dr. Sean Garrett-Roe
April 2015 - April 2016, Pittsburgh PA
Independently designed and implemented experiments to investigate carbon dioxide’s solvation behavior in ionic liquids in order to identify ionic liquids suitable for use in carbon capture.
Discovered trends in carbon dioxide solubility in ionic liquids with respects to a variety of cation-anion pairs through the analysis of FTIR spectra with Matlab.
Identified imidazolium-anion pairings suitable for solvation dynamic studies with ultrafast vibrational spectroscopy in order to investigate liquid crystal structure in ionic liquids.

University of Pittsburgh, Dept. of Chemistry / Curriculum Development Advisor
January 2016 - April 2016, Pittsburgh PA
Assisted in the development of pilot curriculum for a “Safety in the Chemistry Lab” course, intended to teach both the accepted best practices in lab safety and the chemical basis for said practices.
Improved lab safety culture by standardizing safety practices across campus labs, and by fostering students’ hazard recognition, risk mitigation, and accident analysis.
Spearheaded the implementation of electronic laboratory notebooks in student teaching labs to familiarize students with common industry practices, and to improve student organization.

University of Pittsburgh, Dept. of Chemistry / Teaching Assistant, Organic Chemistry II Lab
January 2016 - April 2016, Pittsburgh PA
Directed students in the execution and documentation of laboratory experiments. Duties included: cleaning glassware, stocking chemicals, disposing of waste, and maintaining analytical instruments.
Maintained a clean and safe laboratory environment for 15 students by teaching and enforcing proper lab technique, chemical hygiene, and emergency procedures.
