I believe that math is a subject that students should understand and seldom memorize. My teaching methods would likely vary depending on the student's goals and learning style.
For students who need help with homework and want to increase their math grade, I would base each lesson off of each day's homework assignment. I'd show the student how to do problems like the ones they were assigned and then help them through a few problems until they could do them on their own. Additionally, I would keep track of the topics covered before each exam to devise a student guide for them to prepare with.
For students who need summer math help to get ahead or not fall behind but who are not in a specific class, I would start by giving the student an exam over the whole subject area and then design my curriculum based off of what they do not know. Again, for each session, I would explain how to solve a certain type of problem, then help the student through a few problems until they can do them on their own.
For all students, I give a quiz at the beginning and end of each session to help with knowledge retention over time to ensure that students can still remember how to do the problems that they learned about in previous sessions.
I am a software developer, and I just graduated from The University of Texas at Austin this year with a bachelor of science degree in biomedical engineering with high honors. Prior to that, I attended the Texas Academy of Math & Science at the University of North Texas where I took all college classes for my last two years of high school. While I was there, I volunteer tutored about 20 different middle school students, mostly in math, but also some science. I also volunteer tutored college biology through a separate program. Additionally, I worked as a private tutor for 5 different students in Amarillo, TX, teaching geometry, algebra, and SAT math. Finally, I was always eager to tutor my peers during school because it means so much to me to be able to explain things to people in a way that they can understand it. My favorite subjects to teach are basic math, algebra I & II, geometry, and pre-calculus.
