I first learned to love mathematics as a remedial math student. I was afraid of math until an excellent teacher taught me to think about what the mathematics meant, instead of focusing on "the rules." I emphasize knowing why as a means to understand how. To this end, I work actively to encourage collaboration and questions, use my knowledge about math history, facility with technology, and my content and pedagogical content knowledge to kindle a flame of passion about mathematics in the minds of my students. I hope to schedule a session with you today!
I have been tutoring for fourteen years and teaching for twelve. My students have gone on to careers in engineering, computer science, elementary and secondary education, and numerous other rewarding careers. One of the more touching remarks I received on a student evaluation of instruction can be read below:
"I cannot say enough good things about Roger, I only hope he knows how truly incredible he is as a teacher. His ability to make a student feel comfortable voicing their questions is truly unprecedented. I hope his advisor or whoever reads these understand his gift as a teacher."
I hold bachelors', masters', and doctoral degrees in mathematics education. I was selected as a 2015 STaR fellow, a national mentoring program for early career mathematics educators (see (concealed information) for more details). My proudest moment was in 2014, when the American Indian Council at Montana State University performed an honor dance for me in recognition of my tutoring service.
