To get my students on the right track to becoming fluent, I prioritize the learning of the 1,000 most common words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, pronouns) in the target language. Regardless of the activities that the student prefers or needs, focusing on this specific set of vocab words will expedite the process of learning. I use a frequency dictionary of Spanish for this task. My students decide what kinds of exposure to the language they want to have, whether that is primarily oral, written, or a combination of those modes. I tailor my teaching style and materials to the students' needs (school assignments, work-related language skills, personal goals, etc).
I grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina and I learned English as an adult. I moved to the US in 2011. I later earned a Bachelor's degree in linguistics from Rutgers University. I've tutored Spanish since 2004. I am in love with the English language so I feel like I never studied English for one single minute. Learning a language should be fun, including the challenges whether they be pronunciation, syntax, semantics, or pragmatics.
As Director of Latinas Unidas Program, YWCA Princeton, I had the pleasure of working with Carlos over the time he worked as ESL Instructor, and I was always impressed by his teaching and classroom management skills.
He is a truly gifted educator, he quickly develops a good rapport with his students, establishes solid routines and employs consistent and fair practice in his classroom.
Carlos is a hardworking, well organized committed teacher who has given much to our ESL students.
Carlos is an excellent teacher. As someone who began lessons knowing virtually no Spanish at all, he has been incredibly patient. Carlos tailors each lesson to my evolving level. He has a really encouraging teaching style and challenges me to continue to take risks. He can quickly shift teaching styles to try out new methods that meet my individual learning needs. He takes time to design and tailor each lesson to his students interests. I work in a school and he has helped me craft sentences that I frequently need to use in order to communicate with my students families. Lessons are fun, and filled with interesting facts about the Spanish language, and language in general (he speaks multiple languages). I've tried more traditional Spanish classes in the past, and I can confidently say that I have learned much more through my lessons with Carlos. I would highly suggest working with him!
Carlos and I have been friends for 7 years. From day 1 all we talked about was language, linguistics and language instruction. He always impressed me with the ability he has for capturing complex concepts and explaining them in simple sentences using examples that everybody can relate to. He is a good active listener who cares about how you interact with language.
