Northwestern medical student in Chicago offering academic tutoring in multiple subjects (6-7 years tutoring experience)

Methodology

My teaching methodology is based on a few key principles and strategies that I have concluded—by both active research as well as trial and error—to be the most effective for facilitating learning.

Above all, I try to keep things real and practical so that students can see that what they learn has useful and prolific applications in the actual world. For many students, set subjects such as calculus, physics or even literature have little connection to their lives. Yet the same subjects they might find uninteresting are a source of great passion for many thinkers the world over. Students procure this passion in large part due to understanding that knowledge is not only learned for knowledge's sake, but also for the betterment of the world they live in.

I also have found that students do much better when they realize that they can be independent learners. As a tutor, my job is to assist them in the short-term to achieve their personal goals. However, it is also to help them develop the critical thinking skills necessary to become successful learners for life. In addition to giving rise to more responsible, creative, and profound thinkers, critical thinking also raises students' self-confidence because they feel that their thoughts and opinions are meritorious of consideration by their tutor (me) and indeed, by other thinkers on a given subject. This is the spirit I try to foster.

I also make use of some more focused techniques that have been shown by research to be effective for learning. These include assessment through games, utilization of the Pause Procedure and the Think-Pair-Share Technique (for small groups), and use of fast-paced drills and multimedia tools. I employ humor when appropriate to lighten the mood and encourage engagement and interest. (Although my level of efficacy seems to depend on the audience—most of my former students enjoy it, although my roommates tend to roll their eyes.)

Finally, I believe wholeheartedly that feedback is vital to the learning process. The ultimate aim is to make the most of my students' limited time and resources, so their own views on the structure and content of my sessions is always of primary importance. I full recognize that every student's learning style is different and that a strategy or lesson plan that works for one may not work for another. Therefore, I make it known to all my students at the beginning that feedback is highly encouraged, and I give them ample opportunities to provide it.

Background

I am a 2nd-year medical student at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. I have taught various subjects to hundreds of students of all ages, including K-12 students in the Kumon academic program, students at my former high school, and college students at Northwestern.
