I usually start with a thorough diagnostic assessment . I also like to find out what interests students have so that I can plan lessons around them individually as far as possible. If it were literacy I would usually do a Woodcock assessment.
For other writing/ reading skills I would ask for an essay to look at to get me started on where "gaps" in understanding or skills lie. From there we would establish the purpose and goals of the tutoring and work out priorities and go from there. Each student will have very individual needs so my lessons are in no way a "one size fits all".
I am a teacher of over 30 years experience and my passion is literacy. I have specialized in helping students who may have fallen behind for one reason or another and have taught literally hundreds of students to read. I have a firm belief that everyone can learn and that literacy is they key to that.
I really enjoy exploring literature, both novels and poetry, and am happy to help anyone with their writing skills whether it be for practical purposes or a more creative pursuit.
I have spent time specializing in working with students with disabilities, both intellectual and neurological and these students have rewarded me with good progress.
