Whether you are a composer looking to refine your craft, a music student looking to get ahead in your Theory or Aural Skills classes, a musician preparing for an audition/ jury/ portfolio, or just someone interested in developing musical skills for your own enjoyment, let's work together to unlock your potential and help you achieve your goals.
In my lessons, you will learn hands-on through a holistic approach to music education, so that you are not just memorizing information, but are actually internalizing and truly understanding the content. As a teacher, I want you to love learning music; my goal is to inspire you to be curious, to ask questions, and to prepare you with the understanding, skills, ambition, and direction needed to continue with self-directed learning outside of our lessons.
I am a composer and conductor, and have a background in guitar (jazz and classical) and piano. I hold a PhD in music and have taught students ranging from middle school and high school to undergraduate and graduate students. I've served on university admissions committee for music and have worked on music curriculum at numerous levels. I currently serve as the Artistic Director and the Head of Composition for a modern classical music festival, where I work extensively with top student-musicians from around the country.
One of the unique things that I like to bring into my teaching is the broad range of experience I've gained over many years in the field: I've composed classical concert works, do computer programming to create electronic music, have composed for videogame, dance, and film. As a conductor, I've coached jazz, premiered new works, collaborated on intermedia works, and conducted classical ensembles. I am always curious to learn more, and I am always excited to share what I've learned along the way with my students.
