Professional International Opera Singer with a Doctorate in music giving lessons online

Methodology

My teaching methodology emphasizes the mastery of vocal technique and understanding of core musical concepts. By focusing on the fundamentals of healthy vocal production, my students will realize that singing is a journey of self-discovery that is never-ending.

The act of singing requires an enormous skillset. By understanding the basics of the physiology of the voice, breath support, proper phonation, IPA, and proper stylistic elements, it is my goal that the student will leave with an abundance of knowledge to further their craft. Learning to play an “invisible” instrument certainly comes with its challenges. My aim is to help the student through the use of my knowledge and my personal experiences to help them overcome any obstacles or challenges that they may face in this journey.

I believe that learning is a collective activity. Maintaining an interactive and conversational atmosphere is something for which I strive. In such a subjective art form, honesty is imperative. Therefore, cultivating an open dialogue with students is my top priority. There is no “right” answer when
it comes to helping a student find their voice. Although I use a certain set of skills and techniques for my own vocal production, I take pride in being flexible when communicating concepts to my students. Oftentimes, a simple change in language or taking a different approach can solve a student’s technical
issues.

I constantly pursue creative ways to engage new and young minds to think critically about music. By providing unique experiences, I believe that a diverse range of students will be drawn to appreciate and profit from a music education that emphasizes proficiency and excellence. Whether the ultimate goal is to perform classical repertoire, or to play/sing in a rock band, I encourage my students to share their musical interests and culture in the repertoire that we work on.

Background

I am a musician and foremost an opera singer. I have a Doctorate from James Madison University in Vocal performance/pedagogy/literature. I have been teaching at the collegiate level for over a decade and have taught students at all skill levels to great success. All my students receive the highest level of education in order to pursue their goals, whatever they may be. I also have degrees in piano and organ and teach music theory, history, and composition. If you are learning music just for fun, or want to pursue it professionally, I can help you achieve it.
