« Charles was a wonderful role model in his calculus-based AP Physics-C class. He was extremely focused during class and was never hesitant about asking questions. He was most capable in bridging the gap between calculus and physics and transferring what he learned in each class to the other. He was diligent in his solutions to problems and was always willing to try alternate methods. When my students were permitted to group themselves, Charles was in great demand because of his ability to raise his peers to his level, teaching and not telling, how to solve a physics problem.
When Charles graduated high school, he earned the Physics Award and the Math and English Department Awards for Excellence.
Now as a professional tutor, Charles has continued to teach a wide variety of courses from study skills to college level calculus and physics. He is as passionate about teaching now as he was about learning as my student. He teaches each of his students with respect and dignity and high expectations, raising the bar every time he sees them.

My focus in tutoring is always to help my students build their skills and confidence, step-by-step. I will tailor your lessons to your needs and your unique way of seeing the world. Above all, I approach every lesson with awareness, patience and respect. I try to keep our lessons as fun as possible too! My favorite subjects to tutor are calculus, AP physics, and music, but I find tutoring in all subjects very rewarding!

While studying at one of the top schools in New York, I discovered that I had a natural talent for helping my friends learn difficult concepts. By the time I graduated (magna cum laude), I knew my calling was to be a tutor.

For more than eighteen years now, I've helped hundreds of students foster their educational goals. With my help, students have changed failing grades into A's, aced their SATs, achieved entrance to the Ivy League college of their choice, and successfully completed post-graduate degrees. I'm here to help!

Charles has been working with my two children for a few years now. He's helped them SO MUCH in algebra, geometry, trig and calculus. He's also been very helpful with AP physics and chemistry. Charles completely turned me around in calculus. I was having serious trouble in AP calculus BC before Charles starting working with me. He showed me really great ways of visualizing the calculus problems, and had a real knack for making really complicated things much for simple to understand. I ended up with a 92% in the class!!

When did your passion for math begin?

Charles — As long as I can remember, I loved math. Both my parents are engineers, and my mom later became a math and science teacher. Most of my cousins are in education as well, so you could say it's in my blood!

Charles — Math teaches us two vital skills: pattern recognition and problem-solving.

Have you ever struggled with an area of math and, if so, how did you overcome it?

Charles — I was lucky to always have really great math teachers throughout school. They gave me the tools to systematically work through any area in which I felt less than 100% confident.

What do you think are the qualities required to be a math Superprof?

Charles — Patience, love of learning and teaching, a commitment to helping young people, and the ability to see the math from the student's point of view.

As a mathematician, do you have a favorite formula or theorem and why is it your favorite?

Charles — Great question! I always thought that the definition of a derivative using limits was a very elegant solution to a wide variety of problems. I'm not sure I could pick just one equation as my favorite though.

How does a Super math professor tackle their math lessons; do you have any special methods?

Charles — It varies from student to student, BUT, in general:

1. I try to do things that help students to VISUALIZE the problem - anecdotes, drawings, graphs, whatever helps.

2. I focus in on the fundamentals of whatever we are discussing.

3. I try to instill confidence in my students, to help them see their own strengths, and to impart a sense that the math is easy, fun and beautiful!
