Recently graduated student, with 8 summers of teaching experience, offering lessons in writing thesis statements, analytical essays, nonfiction essays, and artist statements.

Methodology

For analytical essays, I first teach students how to critically look at texts and find themes within them. I then assist them in learning to write strong thesis statements, find quotes or evidence to create the points of their arguments, and lastly structure their essays so that they are clean and understandable.

My lessons are adapted according to what the students know and need to learn. When approaching other forms of writing, such as creative nonfiction essays and artist statements, I choose to workshop drafts and explain what could improve them through written and verbal advice. I then have my students edit their work, reading it out-loud to themselves to help them catch grammar and spelling errors, then turn the second drafts in so I can workshop them and provide more feedback.

Background

I am a writer and an artist with 8 summers of teaching experience and a BA. I have taken 43 credits of English classes at UNM, 9 of which were in the Honors College, and have attended many workshop courses which taught me how to critique writing and help other students. I have also assisted several colleagues in creating and editing their artist statements.
