I have a Juris Doctorate in Laws as well as a Bachelors of Science in Law. As a young man, while in law school, I served as Head Counselor for a UCLA program that prepared inner city youth for college. I taught at Long Beach State University and teach part time at Antioch University. My day job involves teaching under-prepared inner city middle school children, many for whom Spanish is the primary language.
I teach grammar, literacy and subject matter content in the same lesson. This is done by close reading. That is, where necessary, after a passage is read, the student and I will have conversation about what is read. Any grammatical mistakes or misunderstandings will be discussed and corrected. At the end, the students will write a paragraph about what was covered and a written grammatical critique will be provided the student.
At the various levels of secondary and post secondary education, I have been teaching 44 years. An ex-college athlete, I am still physically fit and the youngsters are surprised when they challenge me for a pick up game. My greatest joy is when I see past students who are now doctors, lawyers, professional athletes, police officers and dedicated mothers and fathers.
I do not charge more for under-prepared students.
I was the Head Counselor at the UCLA Educational Opportunity Center from 1975-78. I passed the California Bar and was a private practice attorney specializing in criminal law until 1985. I left the practice for a while and returned briefly from 1990-92. While practicing I taught history and the history of religion at Long Beach State University.
After working in the entertainment industry for some years, I returned to education, teaching computer for health care students, as well as anatomy and physiology at a medical coding and billing school in 2008. Most were adults who lost jobs because of the market crash of 2007. I returned to secondary teaching in 2013 and began to teach at Antioch University the same year.
