Retired brain surgeon and student in Applied Mathematics (finance and mathematical physics), offering tutoring in Georgia (USA), and surrounding states.

Methodology

In mathematics, my teaching method is to go beyond the mathematical symbolism and have the student first understand the underlying concepts. For example, calculus is really a quantification of the laws of change, as described by Heraclitus, Hegel, and others. The structure of the class would depend on the specific needs of the students but, in general, I would try to have the student first grasp the nature of the problem at hand, the various methods by which it might be solved, and how the mathematicians used symbols and logic to develop general solutions. After all, mathematics were developed to address very practical problems, from Egyptian fractions to modern complexity theory.

Background

I am a retired neurosurgeon with a passion for applied mathematics, especially mathematical physics and financial trading (stocks, options and futures). I am currently working on a Certificate in Applied Mathematics. My project applies the concepts of missing information (Shannon's Entropy) and Bernoulli's Principle of Insufficient Reason (both used in modern Thermodynamics) to an analysis of the financial markets.
In my previous work in neurosurgery, I have taught this specialty to neurosurgical residents, conducted research on various neurosurgical issues, and given presentations at national and international meetings.
