I am a retired Teacher of English and a Retired High School Principal. I completed my ESL Certification in July of 2015 for the purpose of continuing my teaching career after retirement. My goal is to move to Costa Rica and continue with my online students once I have relocated there. While living in Costa Rica I also plan to study Spanish.
I prefer working with older students and adults who want to improve their English skills. Since I am also certified in teaching Business English I believe I can be helpful there as well. I have been employed in the Business Community for over 12 years.
I have had over 10 years in the classroom teaching English to grades 7-12. In addition I hold a Master's Degree in Theater Arts. I can draw upon all of these experiences to provide informative and interesting instruction.
I have studied with Howard Gardner at Harvard University exploring the concept of Multiple Intelligence, and I believe that all people learn differently. It is my job to figure out what approach to take when working with my students. I go the extra mile to make sure we are working together to learn.
Having been a teacher, administrator, and a business owner, I am very organized, and I know how to fit in a lot of instruction into one hour. I am also a continuous learner, and I enjoy knowing all about my students and helping them reach their goals.
I currently have students in Brazil and France who I teach Business English to, and I also have a student from Ghana who I am teaching to read.
Teaching ESL online is a new expereience for me. Recently I became involved in Literacy Volunteers for the purpose of practicing my ESL Teaching skills. I am now working with a student from Kenya.
Most of my experience has been learned through extensive travel to Central America, India, Europe and other countries. My family has hosted several International Exchange Students from countries like France, Russia, The Netherlands, Mexico, and Belgium. I believe I can incorporate this understanding into making my lessons work for my students as I will be teaching on their levels.
I have diplomas in Secondary English Education, School Administration K-12, and I hold a Doctorate in Education.
I wrote my Dissertation on incorporating the principles of The School Alliance for Continuous Improvement to effect the overall structure and importance of the classroom setting.
I was recognized as the Principal of the year in 1998 for my work with the Vestal High School. In addition I was instrumental in developing the International Baccalaureate Program at Vestal.
While in Business I was recognized as the Small Business Advocate of the year fro my work with the Global Business Alliance of Binghamton and the Southern Tier.
While a student at Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY I studied with Arthur Lessac who has a program for teaching students who want to speak English and do so without an accent with their native language.
I draw upon all of these experiences to provide lessons for my students, and I am always open to suggestions. I am also a continuous learner as I am now studying Spanish.
Good! Stephen is a very kind person, who always pays attention to what you need or what you want to learn. He is patient, well organized and very punctual. Each week our conversations improve because we know each other better and we can talk about so many different topics. We do not have time to get bored. I enjoy his classes.
I have found Martha to be a very intelligent and hard working student. It is a pleasure to work with her each week.
