I am a San Diego State graduate majoring in Social Science to teach at a Middle/High school level, although the last 18 months I have worked with Elementary aged students through Afterschool care.
My methods in working with Elementary math include first discovering what level the child has mastered (e.g. They're proficient in base 10 math up until the 1000's place). Afterwards, the next step is finding which method of learning they are most comfortable with. At first, students need actual pieces to move around (math cubes), and tangible objects to learn math. Once they are comfortable with that, they are ready to use representations and drawings to learn the subject. Once the learning of the concept has been mastered, they will be ready to use actual numbers and solve problems.
My characteristics as a tutor or teacher is maintaining a positive energy. Many students have a negative association with the subject they are struggling in. Part of my goal is to re-associate the subject with a positive connotation or positive reward.
I have been working with Elementary/Middle School students in math for around 18 months through my employment in Afterschool care. Although I did not have as much one-on-one time as I would've liked to have in giving lessons, the students I worked with saw an increase in their performance.
I used the minimal time I had in one-on-one instruction to teach the students strategies which they used in class. One of the strategies I taught to a student involved representing place values with shapes in order to add and subtract hundreds together. The student's teacher later told me that the student was keeping up with the material because of my instruction.
For any students North of the 52 freeway, South of the 54 freeway, or East of the 125 freeway, I will ask for 1 extra dollar per hour to compensate for gas.
