« I first met Stephen as a student in his Spanish class at UC Santa Barbara.. His knowledge of the language helped me build my skills and confidence to the point where I began applying for the chance to study in a Spanish-speaking country. Stephen often compares Spanish grammar points to the ones in English in order to make the content easier to understand and explain why certain things happen in the language, but don't let this fool you into thinking that he lectures all the time. Stephen also uses games and movements to bring about whole brain teaching and uses engaging stories from his own experience to bring humor. These stories often helped the class and I understand when something is either necessary or appropriate in a Spanish-speaking country. The most important reason why I recommend Stephen Watson though is not just for his knowledge, but for his approachability. He is engaging, welcoming, and patient to help with any question whether it's vocabulary to the nuances of the subjunctive mood. I, Cameron Victor Rabell, say that anybody who chooses this man for their teacher/ tutor will never be disappointed. »

Spanish teacher with PhD, 8 years classroom teaching experience in Santa Barbara

Methodology

I believe that language learning is best when both practical and fun. Genuine, spontaneous communication in realistic scenarios is the key. Within the flexibility allowed by the curriculum, topics of discussion will be tailored to students' interests while also including cultural and historical information.

Background

I learned to love Spanish during 2 years of missionary service in Guatemala. Since then, I have earned my PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures. I have been teaching Spanish grammar since 2010 with class sizes ranging from 5 to 30 students. I have also spent significant time working one-on-one with students during office hours, including students with learning disabilities.

Professor Watson is just genuinely an all-around good guy at the end of the day. He’s bright spirited and fun, which made the (for me) difficult task of learning Spanish a much more enjoyable experience. He obviously speaks Spanish incredibly well, and teaches it well too, and following a semester in his class I went abroad to Spain and managed to survive! If that’s not a glowing endorsement I don’t know what is!
