Student-focused engaging lessons from a TEFL Certified ESL Instructor with a BA in English Literature.

Methodology

My students are adults who want to improve their English to meet their professional or educational goals. My lessons focus on the specific objectives of each student. As a result, they are interesting and my students become fully engaged in the lesson. My students gain the confidence they need with their written and spoken English to achieve their goals. Group rates considered.

Background

Hello! I am an American native-speaker who currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. My father was British and I spent a quarter-year of high-School in the UK. I've been giving ESL lessons since April 2016 and have taught from 1 - 30 students at a time. I also teach Hospitality and Business to adult international students in a classroom setting.

The focus of my lessons is always the student's objectives. First, we chat and I find out what the student needs. Then I deliver a lesson that focuses on those objectives. Be it accent reduction, improved vocabulary or sentence construction, I find a way for my students to grow in their area of need. This personal approach is enjoyable and effective for my students.

Superprofs is an attractive option for me because I'll be able to work with my students over time and help them grow and develop. Other online platforms don't offer that continuity with students. Continuity is a key element of success!

Let me know know I can help you succeed with English.

Thanks, Lynda

I've worked with Lynda at CSI for since she started here. Lynda has always been a responsible and thorough teacher who was passionate about teaching her students and knowledgeable about the curriculum. I've managed her teaching program and now teach as a fellow adjunct instructor and in both situations she has been shown to be exemplary in the classroom. I fully recommend her for this teaching opportunity.

I've known Lynda since 2001, when we attended Graduate schools at UMass, Amherst and worked as colleagues, as Teaching Assistants to the same Professor. In our assignments, we both worked with a group of 15-20 Undergraduate students for the entire semester, closely working with them to hone their management, culinary and operational skills, managing a functioning restaurant.

I've seen Lynda work closely with her students, and sharing her knowledge about the Hospitality Industry, through years of extensive experience, and mentoring them one-on-one, leading them to success in their future careers.

I've also closely worked with Lynda for a couple of years during our time together at Graduate school, on several projects and assignments, and found her to be very details-oriented and someone who relied on research and empirical data, before coming to a conclusion on any of the several topics we studied over the years.

Post graduation, I've known Lynda to a very hardworking and dedicated person, who enjoys life, people and opportunities and challenges, that she takes in her stride with a smile and positive attitude.

Andy

Lynda is a nice, smart and discipline teacher. She taught us the hospitality classes in CSI and she was always well prepared and structured the content that she wanted to deliver. What I like her the most is she always speaks with smile, which I can a see a warm heart from inside.

Interview with Lynda

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
Lynda — I developed an interest in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in 2015 and in private tutoring in 2016.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
Lynda — My students are adult professionals who want to improve their English to meet their goals and/or specific objectives. English is not their native language, but most are competent with their English. They just need help with their presentation, written and spoken, to elevate their presentation. The topics I like to discuss with my students are their goals and their interests. That could be work emails and presentations, graduate school applications, or communicating with employees. I find out their personal interests to use materials that they will enjoy as they learn new vocabulary and use it, written and spoken.
QUESTION 03 | 08
Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Lynda — Yes, Dr, Bette Mandl EDD
Bette was my professor at Suffolk University in Boston. She knew the strengths, weaknesses, and interests of every student. This made her classes memorable and effective. I ran into her many years after graduation and she remembered me. And of course, I remembered her.
As a role model, she inspired me to really get to know my students, including their goals and challenges. With this kind of focus, my customization approach to lesson plans was developed.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Lynda — To be a good tutor, one needs these qualities, primarily:
• Motivation to see the student succeed.
• Ability to listen to the student.
• Creativity to develop lesson plans that will benefit each student.
• Flexibility
QUESTION 05 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
Lynda — Recently, I tutored a student for four months. This student was in Boston for a project and is a manager in his home country, which he dearly missed. Our lessons were his time to relax and focus on himself, a luxury. His company has many U.S. clients. When he returned to his home country, events made his work with the U.S. front and center. His time working with me on his English paid off almost immediately when he got home.
QUESTION 06 | 08
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
Lynda — International students have been brought up with different style standards for their English. Sometimes, there is nothing wrong with their writing, technically. However, in the American mindset, there can be style problems. The best example is a sentence that is grammatically correct, but too long. Americans are taught to avoid long sentences. I run into this all the time and just consider the purpose of the material. Another style challenge is the Oxford comma. That is a healthy debate anywhere. Add different teaching styles from other countries or other tutors’ opinions (past or current) and confusion can result. Again, I go back to the purpose of the content and proceed accordingly.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
Lynda — My passions are travel, culture, and teaching. When I was growing up, I was identified as gifted and talented. I told my father that I want to be a teacher. “You can do better than that!” was his response, because I’m so smart. I grew up and had a whole career in Hospitality Management. Then life came full circle: I started teaching ESL so that I can easily work for myself, anywhere in the world, with people from different cultures. It combines my passions for travel, culture, and teaching!
QUESTION 08 | 08
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions)?
Lynda — My focus on the specific goals and objectives of my students makes me a Superprof! I interview them and find out why they want or need English lessons. Then each lesson is focused on their needs and wants for their English. It’s all about them, not boring textbook exercises. I find out where they need to grow and make custom exercises for them, with material that is of interest to them. Not only do my students enjoy their lessons with me, but they also grow their English skills in ways that support their goals and objectives. I help people make their dreams come true!
