i excelled in math and english at pella community high school and entered drake university, des moines, ia, with intentions of majoring in actuarial science. however i found my main interests to be psychology and religion and switched my major to psychology my sophomore year. i graduated drake in 1975 with a b.s. in psychology and minors in religion and sociology. i married shortly after graduating and my wife had obtained a special ed. teaching position in west union, ia. i tried finding employment relating to my studies, but soon found that a masters degree was necessary to procur that line of work. in the meantime while looking for employment till i decided what school to attend to get my masters, i was hired on with the chicago & northwestern as a brakeman and later became a locomotive engineer. that was fine with me as i had a childhood dream of becoming an engineer. i worked for the railroad for 14 yrs, then went in to various sales and sales management jobs and later was a tutor for educational resources association in west des moines. i loved working with students and was promoted to assistant manager within a year. i'm retired and disabled and would love helping students progress in their studies again. also, my hours are very flexible. i have always enjoyed working with students- i strive to make learning enjoyable while also meeting their objectives. i am friendly, easy going and enjoy the challanges of educational development in our young people and adults also. i will do my best in meeting whatever goals my students have.
Although i spent a number of years working on the railroad i found time to be a mentor and coach for young people. i have coached 8 - 12 yr olds in baseball and basketball, been a sunday school teacher at times; was a den leader and later a cubmaster in the cub scouts; was a client specialist for autistic clients in a group home and am an ordained minister with the Universal Life non-denominational church. i enjoy helping others and especially the young people in making their lives more enjoyable and meaningful.
as explained above, i have held numerous leadership roles with our young people and although i never acquired a teaching certificate, i feel i am very capable at teaching the basics to our young people especially. i have strived to teach my own children what i consider the the essential values of respect, compassion, kindness and love for one another above all else for these are the qualities needed more than ever in today's society if we are to evolve in becoming a better person and a blessing to all those we encounter in life.
