Teaching So Children Can Grow, Reinforcing Skills So They Can Gain Confidence

Methodology

When a student says "I can't", I ask "Why?" “Teaching so children will grow” has been my motto since graduating from Calvin College in 1978. For 8 years, I supervised a volunteer college students to tutor elementary students. For 29 years, I've taught in classrooms.

During different summers, I worked with a third grader, 2 fourth graders, a fifth grader, and seventh graders. We focused on their math, reading, and/or their composition skills. Three students continued into the school year. I worked with one on math, and helped others to research/write a history paper.

Background

Malia pulled her 6th grade Math from F to C+, and 3 TAG students went ahead of the class. Michael wanted accountability, so I spent recesses reading 3 books and writing reports.

In 2016, I tutored 3 Spanish speaking adults in English. We focused on enunciation, sentence formation, and comprehension. We've hosted/tutored about 30 short term and school year students.
